Might help if you were running Windows 7 64-bit instead of 32-bit.
Yep. But I can't afford to buy a new pc.
Guess it's time to contact tech support...

I believe that HP is a 64-bit computer so you just need to install the 64-bit version of Windows 7. Of course you'd have to backup and restore and reinstall all of your apps too.

That may be true, but I prefer to stay 32bit for a while because everything is working great (except for a couple of minor issues) and I may experience different kinds of issues by installing the 64bit OS. Also, there's no guarantee that it will fix this Busy issue.
But I appreciate your suggestion. Thanks. :)

Couple of things..... first there's nothing to fear from x64 bit. I've been totally x64 since V7with no major isssues. Second I doubt it'll fix the "Busy" issue either.

Are you sure there's no busses or anything ouputting to a "dead end" out. I can re-produce this but only by setting an output to a non-existant harware out. i.e. an output on my interface that doesn't have a direct out. By that I mean it can't be heard without re-routing

Also re: 64-bit... in 32-bit Windows your computer can only use 3GB of memory. With 64 bit the limit is 16 GB with Win 7 Home and 256GB with Win 7 or 8 Pro. Makes a big difference with memory intensive programs like Sonar.

Karl, I put ALL I did in my first post. And I also did the same test using a different project template (Normal template), only to produce the same result.
Maybe Cake knows how to stop "Busy" from being displayed EVEN when the waveforms are indeed in the busy state.
I don't need Sonar to tell me it's busy because if I see no waveforms in the clip I'll just perform the "Recompute Picture(s)" command.
I see waveforms fine, I hear the sound fine. All I need is the "Busy" to disappear (just because I don't want to see it in all audio clips).

I know what you mean, Dave. But the thing is, I definitely would have to pay for additional memory and the 64bit OS.
Will the VST loading time become less than half if I upgrade to 64bit? If so, I might seriously considering it because that's the only thing I'm not happy with at the moment (but bearable).
Also, when I was buying this laptop, I was already interested in 64bit OS but there was no 64bit option in the OS pull-down menu on the purchase page. There was a different line of hp laptops that offered 64bit OS, but they were far more expensive so I chose this laptop with 4GB memory.
As I said, I'm quite happy with my current setup, and prefer not to spend time on reinstalling everything. I did a clean OS reinstall in February and it wasn't easy. My time for music per week is very limited so I really want to go on with this system. Please let me make music.

What drive you have your picture cache installed on? It should be in c:\Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache. How much available space do you have on that drive?

What bit depth and sample rate are you using?

Also, make sure your Quad Capture is connected and activated when in Sonar. You may want to try an uninstall/re-install of the drivers for it.

Not sure if this helps, but the only time I see the "busy" message in tracks is after I have recorded an audio track on my old P4 Laptop. It's specs are ages behind the times but it's all I have right now for a mobile rig and it works OK.

But that is the one thing that is a noticeable difference between it and my W7 64 bit machine.
With the 64 bit machine - 2 seconds and the busy thing is gone.
With the XP 32 bit laptop , the busy stays for more than a minute depending on track count and length of song.

If you scroll towards the end of the song you will see all the wave forms are blank and slowly being drawn while this is happening.
But it eventually is happy. I'm sure if I deleted the picture cache it would repeat this slow process again.

PS, you will see a big improvement overall if you go 64 bit.  I sure did.

I have partitioned my hard drive into three drives and they're basically configured like this:

C: OS and applications (Sonar is here)
D: Library Content (Cakewalk Content is here)
E: Other files, including those I create and save (Cakewalk Projects, which contains Picture Cache, is here) [Available space: 8.84GB]

Quad Capture is always connected and activated when in Sonar. I even disconnected it and reconnected it a few days ago but it didn't help.
Also, I have recorded a couple of full-length songs in Studio One and have absolutely no problem.
Will consider driver re-install.
