I'm trying apply a little bit of delay to the last syllable of a word but just can't get my head round the instructions that come up when I click on the help button.

Can anyone explain it in more simple terms please?

create a bus
add the delay
add a send to the track to the bus
create an input gain envelope on the bus
pull the whole envelope to zero
adjust the envelope to correct amount above zero for the bits you want to delay
envelope back to zero right after

clone the track
add delay to effects bin
mute all but what is to be delayed

jm24's first suggestion is how I do it when using the Sonitus delay. It's the easiest method for that particular plugin.

Another way:

Clone the track.
Cut out the portion you don't want delayed
Nudge the remainder along the timeline where you want to hear it delayed
Repeat the last step for multiple delays

No plugins involved

Not mentioned yet. IMO the fastest way:
Cut the syllable you want effected so it is a clip of its own. Insert delay as Clip FX.

That's what I do. The one caution is the delay (or reverb, or any time-based effect with a "tail") will stop when the clip stops. I extend the length of the clip to create silence that's as long as I want the delay to last.

Variation on JM24's first suggestion
Add a send envelope to the track and send just the bit to delay
And then if you need to do it again the bus is ready and waiting and willing

If you're feeling adventurous you could put a compressor on the delay bus (after the delay plugin) and side chain it to the vocal track. Set the threshold and ratio so that the delayed vocal is squashed while the vocalist is singing, but comes back up when the singing stops. This way, you'll only hear the delays in between vocal phrases, not during. You have to play with the attack and release to make it sound smooth. Very quick and easy to set up and saves you having to draw envelopes.
