Hey anyone, I connected my midi controller--Roland A49--to my song and when playing a key in any instrument the note comes out delayed by almost a second. I guess it has something to do with the (to me) abstruse Cakewalk input/output panel, but I'm not sure. The keyboard is showing up in the in/out panel, alonmg with midi omni, and my USB external sound "card'. Any advice? Thanks!

Are you using Asio drivers for your sound card? You should. Check here

also with stock soundcards "ASIO4ALL" is a free download that works really great with low latency!

To the original poster:

Your computer specs are not listed in your form profile's Signature section (see the bottom of mine for an example), so I don't know if you are running Sonar on a desktop computer or on a laptop.

IF you are running Sonar on a laptop - please try turning off or disabling your Wi-Fi adapter just prior to launching Sonar.  IF this fixes things for you, then you will want to make sure that every time you are going to work in Sonar, that you temporarily turn off or disable the Wi-Fi adapter for the laptop, then launch Sonar, then when finished with Sonar turn the Wi-Fi back on or enable it, to get the internet back again.  For many laptops, the presence of a Wi-Fi adapter can cause problems with Sonar.

If the above does not fix anything, or you are using a desktop computer, then please review and respond to the following:

1.  Are you running a dedicated audio interface?  If so, what is the model name?
2.  In Sonar, are you using a driver mode of ASIO?  (Edit>Preferences>Audio>Playback and Recording)
3.  In Sonar, please post the Sample Rate and the listed reported latency values (Edit>Preferences>Audio>Driver Settings for both)
4.  Does your project have any loaded effects?  If so, please post all the plugins loaded into the particular project that is giving you the lag.  In addition, does the lag go away if you hit the letter 'E' on your computer keyboard and then try to play notes on your controller?  (The letter 'E' toggles on/off the bypass of all loaded effects, so if the lag goes away after bypassing all the loaded effects, then it means that one or more of your loaded effects are contributing/causing the lag.  Hit 'E' again to turn all effects back on again, by the way).

I recommend ASIO4ALL only as a last resort if you're not using an external audio interface with native drivers, as performance may be compromised (in some cases, quite compromised).

I concur with Craig on being wary of ASIO4ALL.  IF no other solution is available, then ASIO4ALL might provide a temporary band-aid work around, but it has been known to interfere with other audio drivers and programs just by being installed on a computer, so once an audio interface is obtained you would want to completely remove (uninstall) all traces of ASIO4ALL.

But again - it may provide a temporary solution to audio issues, so it might be worth experimenting with as a short-term workaround.

I have had similar issues when trying to use my remote rig. Although I have a MOTU 896 as my interface I suspect the problem lies with trying to connect my MIDI Sport 2x2 to a Yamaha keyboard. I have noticed that I usually have problems if I connect th MIDI cable to the keyboard prior to opening Sonar X3. This is not always the case but may be a similar problem for you. try the following:

* Disconnect MIDI cable from your keyboard
* Restart/reboot beyboard
* Restart Sonar
* Reconnect MIDI cable

This may or may not work for you. But give it a try. It just might help.

Regards!!

There are USB midi Drivers for the A 49 ( I own one) and therefore it has nothing to do with your audio interface it's drivers and it's latency. You could have a top of the line RME or a sound blaster and this makes no difference to the Roland's latency.
The Latency you are experiencing will no doubt be due to a look ahead plug in like LP64.
By pass any heavy use plug ins or all of them while recording MIDI.

I DO concur that latency could well be caused by one or more plugins - and I covered that in my earlier post, but there are other potential causes for the lag - such as Driver Mode or ASIO Buffer Size, or a Wi-Fi adapter/driver, etc.

Soooo, until the original poster responds with additional information, we cannot declare that any particular one thing is causing the experienced lag.

@JOHN.WEISSMAN - there are several folks poised to assist you, so please respond to my earlier post at your earliest convenience, and I (we) will do what is possible to assist. :)
