Hi all,
I need to clone a track and then be able to make edits to the new track while leaving the old track in tact.  It seems that any changes I make to the cloned track are reflected in the cloned track.  How can I just clone the track and have it be independent from the original?

With either MIDI or audio clips, make sure that "Link to Original Clips" isn't checked.

What type of track are you cloning?
 
Audio. MIDI or S.I.T. (Simple Instrument Track)?  There are complications with cloning S.I.T.s.
 
BTW - looking at your avatar - George Formby always looked bigger on film - I guess that's why they call it the big screen..

Craig is on the money. You should be able to clone a track and make independent edits to one of them. In fact I think this is the default behavior, or it used to be. Do the clips have dotted borders? If so, they are probably linked and as Craig suggests, you should turn off "Link to original clips" in the Clone Track dialog. 

The "link to original clips" is NOT selected and the clips do not have the dotted border as they do if I were to select that box.
 
Jb101 - I think you might know what's up - it's a simple instrument track.  What are the complications?  Is there any way to get around it...?
 

Simple instrument tracks are...simple. I prefer to use separate MIDI and audio tracks in a track folder. 

Wow. Just for kicks, I tried this:
New Project; Insert instrument (4Front Rhodes); simple instrument track (which I never normally use).
Then I used the PRV to create a simple small clip.
Then I selected the track and right-click Clone.... CRASH!
I've sent the crash report to Cakewalk. CWBRN-30426.
 
I'll try again, this time using an "approved" in-the-box instrument...
 
UPDATE:
Wow, same problem. This is with the Studio Instruments Bass Guitar VST. X3e. After a clean boot and first time opening SONAR.
Seems pretty reproduceable, at least on my system.

To avoid the crash, do not select the track before cloning. As mentioned earlier and in the link, cloning instrument tracks generally does not produce a useful result.

Ah, thanks scook. It makes sense this has been found and reported; seems pretty major.
 
OK, without selecting the track first, I can clone a simple instrument track and I do not see the linking effect described by Mike. I also tried Preferences > Custom > MIDI > Copy entire clips as linked clips; did not make a difference.
 
So, I dunno!?

Cloning S.I.T.s does not really work.  Both the original track and the cloned track "reference" the same "instance" of softsynth. 
 
IIRC, this is alluded to in the manual.  I will try to find a thread where this was discussed some time ago.  I can see why it works this way, however frustrating it may seem.
 
As mentioned above, S.I.T.s are just that - Simple (and convenient).  If one wants further functionality, it can be better to use separate Instrument and MIDI tracks.
 
Having said that, I use S.I.T.s all the time (when multi outs aren't needed).  It is easy to split them later on if needed.
