I just hooked up an Alesis Multimix8 usb to Cakewalk Studio and when I record a new guitar track the beat that I have already laid down as a track records over my new guitar track.  Can anyone help me separate my tracks so they don't bleed together?  I didn't have this issue with my 2 port M-Audio.

You obviously have not figured out the new interfaces monitoring and signal path. Sonar does not bounce tracks together easily, so this has to be your hardware.  If it has a software mixer check your not doing a loop back. 

I spoke to soon... Sorry but it is unlikely the device will work with Sonar. It will work with things like Audacity. How many times do we have to see the words asio4all today? 
Fact- Sonar works best with a True blue audio interface that comes with true blue ASIO drivers. All other devices will perform poorly. 
 
This Alesis audio interface is a plug-and-play device, which means that no additional drivers need to be installed to use it with your computer. If you use ASIO compatible audio software on your Windows PC, this optional ASIO driver can be used to offer additional configuration options such as latency and buffer adjustments.

Johnny V, thanks for the reply.  You are correct in your assessment that I have not figured out the interface.  It is a plug and play Alesis Multimix 8 (no software) and I figured Sonar would have picked up on all the inputs but it doesn't recognize 1/3, 2/5 etc...  Did I make a mistake within Sonar on how it recognizes the inputs?

Just saw your response as I was sending mine.  So am I better off getting a focusrite 8 channel and using the multimix on my P/A?  Anything else you would recommend that is relatively cheap than focusrite?

Please detail your tracks and routing assignments for the project you are struggling with.  
 
How did you record your drum beat?
 
What steps did you then take to attempt to record a guitar track?
 
I am also assuming you mean Sonar X3 Studio.  Please clarify.

There DO appear to be drivers for this interface, per the Alesis web site, and the reference manual suggests trying both WDM and ASIO to see which driver mode works better for the given system.
 
From page 38 of the reference manual:
 
"For applications like Sonar that support both WDM and ASIO modes, you may want to experiment with each to see if either mode offers greater stability."
 
And the drivers can be downloaded from this site:

Click on the Docs and Downloads tab and you will see 32-bit and 64-bit drivers.
 
So, I look forward to getting some clarity on exactly what you did and how you have things set up.  I will try to help you, if I can.

I downloaded the 64-bit Windows drivers for your Alesis Multimix 8 USB, and opened the setup 'ini' file, which has various variables and messages and such, for the set up.
 
In that file, I found the following:
 
"TXT_STATUS_INSTALL_ASIO=Installing the ASIO driver."
 
I definitely believe that your mixer has ASIO drivers, which should work fine with Sonar.  Please note that there did NOT appear to be drivers released for Windows beyond Windows 7, and I do not know what version of Windows you are running.  It is quite possible that the Win 7 drivers may work just fine in Win 8.
 
I would also like to point out that the documentation reference manual for your mixer/interface includes setup info for working with Sonar, BUT the version of Sonar they are referencing is from WAY WAY WAY back in time to Sonar 4, so the documentation is not current.

That's interesting Bob as my visit to the support page has the drivers as beingAsio4all. So they are not forthcoming with the truth. And the mixer is just using a stereo USB generic out/in. People are fooled into thinking these boards are multi channel usb interfaces when all they csan really do is play or record stereo music. 

I think there might be different versions of these boards, some of which are multi-channel. Several years ago I used a Multimix16 although that was firewire. That was multichannel. For a long time the only way I could get it working correctly was using ASIO4ALL as their drivers were absolute rubbish. It worked very well using those.
 
Not long before I switched to Allen & Heath they did upgrade their ASIO drivers which worked fine too.
 
The FW version was superceded by a USB version and they were definitely multi-channel.
 
I think prior to that though there was a USB stereo only version. I could of course be completely wrong aabout that though.
