Does anyone know how I can change patches in a VST with an Axiom 49 midi keyboard? When I open a VST like Alchemy free player, it allows to assign a rotary with the "midi learn" function, but it won't give me an option to use midi learn for changing patches.

The patches need to be pre loaded into the VST and then changed with PROGRAM CHANGE midi command.  Not all VSTs support this and each VST has it's own way to preload the program numbers.   In essence, you need to know what program number you loaded into the VST for each instrument and then use that program in your patch change MIDI command.

Sounds confusing but it is not.

It seems not that many VSTis respond to program change commands.

Thanks for the help. Do you know how I can figure out what the program number is? Is there some sort of window I can load in Sonar X3 studio that shows the program numbers, etc.

How VST react on program/bank change is up to VST. In case of Alchemy:
