I'm considering using my UX2 as the main sound card for my Win XP2 system with SHS7XL... has anyone tried this? I'm currently using an Audigy SE with WDM drivers in Sonar, and it seems like using the UX2 (which I already own) would be a good way to upgrade to ASIO drivers without buying any new equipment. What are the drawbacks to using the TonePort as my main sound card for Home Studio?

Thanks!

Hello,

I am a Toneport UX2 user with consecutively:

Cubase SX 2/ 3 (legit, the dongle is in my usb hub permanently)

Cakewalk Music maker 3 upgraded to:
Cakewalk Sonar Studio 6->7->8

No problems with the interface. work together like a charm....

I don't understand your question however. the Line6 UX2 is a FAR SUPERIOR audio interface/ soundcard then the Audigy! I really don't understand what the Audigy is still doing there if you own a UX2.

It is like saying, I own and drive a 20 year old sh*t car (the Audigy), but I also own a new BMW (the UX2) would I dare to drive the BMW? What are the drawbacks..

you should always use only the UX2 and not the soundblaster when working with SHS. using ASIO drivers and selecting only the UX2 is the best way to do that. trying to use both soundcards at the same time will cause you sync problems because they do not use the same internal clock. use the UX2 only and you will have fewer problems all around.

As Beagle observes, your Toneport now serves as your soundcard, and is much better than the SB

Thanks to all of you for your quick answers this morning! I've only been using my UX2 sporadically to record guitar and vocals, I don't keep it connected all the time. But I will do so and configure my system to use it for the main sound card.

One final question: the Creative Audigy card has a built-in synthesizer chip (or so I understand), and the UX2 does not. Will that affect anything if I completely bypass the Audigy, disabling it in Windows, and use the UX2 for everything on my computer?

Well, I tried using the UX2 as my primary sound card yesterday and was successful with everything except CD burning... I get a terrible stutter now when I burn CDs, regardless of which program I use (Nero or Acid Music Studio). I have no idea what the issue is, since I disabled the Audigy card in the system, disabled Norton Antivirus (after taking the computer offline), had all the drivers set to ASIO with 24-bit depths, on all my software programs.

Like I say, my software was happy, everything sounded and played great, but I can no longer burn a CD that isn't flawed. I made perfect wav files and MP3s... it's confuisng.

Anyway, I may have to revert to the Audigy or just replace it with an M-Audio 2496... but if anyone else has had a similar experience to this running Windows XP 2, let me know.

I'm circumambulating well outside my area of expertise here, but I'll venture a guess:

When I export files to mp3 or wav files I'm limited to 16 bit. If your drivers are 24 bit, might that not create a conflict? Like I said, it's merely a guess............

I'm exporting in 16-bit, and they read that way if I open up the "Properties" tab on one of the wav files... but the main reason I think that's not the problem is because I can't burn my older wav files correctly either... the ones I created before the switchover, and which burned perfectly before then.

your soundcard doesn't have anything to do with the burn process. are you saying that if you use your SB card in Sonar you can burn CDs with Nero, but if you use your Toneport you can't?

something is completely wrong there, if that's the case. they don't have anything to do with each other for burning. if that's not what you're saying, then we'll need more details on what you've done. did you disable the SB card in windows? did you physically remove it? did you remove the SB software? or did you just use the toneport in ASIO driver mode in Sonar and leave the SB card in windows?

I disabled the SB card in windows, and changed all of the system defaults via the Windows XP Control Panel to use the UX2 for absolutely everything, both recording and playback. However, I didn't remove the SB software, and maybe that somehow is partly to blame. Nor did I physically remove the PCI card from my box.

I set up the UX2 via GearBox to use 24-bit drivers at 44.1, and did the same in Sonar, 24-bit for both recording and rendering, using the ASIO drivers rather than the WDM drivers I had been using with the Audigy card.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head with the SB software issue, though. We'll see. Thanks!
