I just treated myself to a new laptop, and before I load X3 up, I wanted to hear your suggestions for installation paths.

I have a new external storage drive, and I will install X3 on my resident drive. Would you install Addictive Drums on the main drive, and possibly put all the samples on the external? Also what about my virtual instruments (CW Studio Instruments, Amplitube amp sims), main install on drive with samples on external?

I want to set this up right the first time, so any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

An external drive is choked by its connection, and even on USB3 drives I have noticed that they do not deliver the speeds that I initially expected. They are, however, great for backing up data (projects, audio, etc.). Unless you find yourself strapped for space (which would most likely be from samples), I would default to keeping everything on the computer itself (especially with an SSD of sufficient volume). For the software you mentioned, you should not encounter space issues.
