To be honest I'm not entirely sure what this entails as I've just read the email and I'm too tired to take it all in, lol....I just figured that I might as well post it here since Gobbler is integrated within Sonar and I know a lot of you will be using Gobbler as a backup (because it's awesome). Anyway it looks like they're going to be doing the transition to Gobbler 2.0 (which is currently in beta) so you're going to start again. I'm a little confused about the whole membership thing. Are they effectively terminating everyone's membership and making them reapply for 2.0? Will the Sonar integration still work? The whole thing seems a little off to be honest. Anyway, this is what it says:

In preparation for some big changes, we have to do some major housekeeping. As we transition to our new product platform, the files you have stored in Gobbler 1.0 will be unavailable after December 1st
Please login to the Gobbler 1.0 client and download any files you need before December 1st.
We know this transition may bring up questions, so see below for answers to the ones we've received most-frequently:
Q: I paid for an annual membership, what happens to my money?A: We will be refunding you the difference between what you paid and the amount of time left on your membership. You will not be billed again for the Gobbler 1.0 service.
Q: How much time do I have to migrate from 1.0?You have until 11:59PM PST, December 1st to login and download your files from the Gobbler server. After that, your files will no longer be accessible.
Q: How do I download my 1.0 data?
A: You can download your data by clicking on "Files in Gobbler" in your Library, and then selecting one or many files, right-clicking and choosing "Download".

Q: What happens to my data?A: Your data will be permanently deleted, and neither Gobbler or our hosting partners will be able to access it any longer.
Q: Can I move my data from 1.0 to 2.0?A: Yes, but you will need to do so manually. Visit the new Gobbler.com site to learn more!
Q: I still want to collaborate on my music projects, what can I do?A: Good news, the new version of Gobbler still allows you to collaborate on your projects! Try out the latest version by visiting Gobbler.com, logging in to your account, and clicking the "Switch to 2.0" link on the top right. Even better, while it’s in beta it’s totally free!
Q: I referred a bunch of my friends to Gobbler because its great, and earned extra free space...what about me?A: You’re awesome, and we love you. Don’t worry...we’ve got some special stuff coming in our new product that you’ll get for free!
Q: I user Gobbler for my class at school, what should I do?A: Please contact [link=mailto:transition-support@gobbler.com?subject=Using%20Gobbler%20for%20educational%20classes&body=Hi%20there%2C%0A%0AI%20am%20using%20Gobbler%20as%20part%20of%20my%20class%20curriculum.%20What%20can%20I%20do%20when%201.0%20goes%20away%3F!]transition-support@gobbler.com[/link] and we’ll figure out the right solution for you on a case-by-case basis!
Q: I still have a question about the transition thats not answered here, where do I go to get my answers?A: Send an email to transition-support@gobbler.comand we'll get back to you right away.
Thanks for being a good friend, we're excited for the next phase of what’s to come...stay tuned!

That's not a lot of warning,  I can see a lot of people finding their files have been deleted...

Hard to believe.  What if you don't have the space on your computer ?

Rather an odd way of doing business...

Sell the Promise to the client their data is safe and secure in your "cloud", only to then tell the client they will lose their data if they don't immediately remove it from your cloud...

And how about those threatening emails telling you your free extra space is going away unless you pay to upgrade...

I paid and still received threats!

Strange business model, indeed.

Anyone use SquareSpace?
Now there's a kickin' server company that knows how to scale without interupting their clients workflow.
They even secured their servers after a hurricane brought flooding to their building!
Gobbler might learn a thing or two watching that one...

Looks like I may fall back on my ol' Hightail (YouSendIt) account for cloud storage...

Anyone at Cakewalk have the skinny on what's going on?

Thanks,
MG

This one was an easy one to see coming - Gobbler 1.0 reminded me of DOS 1.0 - no hierarchy. Sooner or later they were going to do something about it. I don't see why they can''t grandfather the old 1.0 system under the new, but the change is definitely needed.

When they say that the balance of your unused time will be refunded, I get the feeling that there will be no seemless transition to 2.0 Nobody gives back money unless they see it as a way to get more money. I smell a new feature for X4... Now with Gobbler 2.0!

Well this all sucks. I hope Cake take out their Gobbler integration from X4. This is from their blog:

 • Gobbler 1.0 and Gobbler 2.0 use completely separate databases which means anything you have stored in your Gobbler 1.0 account will not appear in your Gobbler 2.0 account, and vice versa.
 • Gobbler 2.0 does not support Windows yet… So, if you are a windows user, or you collaborate with Windows users, you will want to stay on Gobbler 1.0 for now.
So basically: "Despite our earlier promises to keep your data safe, we're going to delete it on December 1. And if you're a Windows user, you're screwed."

I think that pretty much tells you everything you need to know about them as a company and their commitment to keeping your data safe. I'm all for software updates, but let's be honest - a better company than Gobbler would have orchestrated a seamless data transition, and they certainly wouldn't have kicked a huge chunk of their users to the curb like this. "You will want to stay on Gobbler 1.0 for now" does not gel with "we are deleting your 1.0 data after December 1."

They must've hired a bunch of Mac weenies - it's easy for them to forget that Windows is the dominant OS.

I think this needs clarification. Does it mean you can stay on 1.0, but your files will be deleted so you'll have to upload them again manually and start over, or does it mean that Gobbler 1.0 itself won't work after December 1? It also says that Gobbler 2.0 doesn't work on Windows "yet." Does that mean it will be ready by December 1?

I emailed Gobbler with these questions, we'll see what the response is.

I'm thinking this is going to be a black eye for Cakewalk that partnered with them to bring this feature to X3, etc......
I mean, think of the gigs and gigs of audio data, etc. one would have to download back to one's computer to upload back to version 2....
I know I wouldn't want to do that......plus, some people don't have the connection speed or the time to do that...:)
There's a reason why this is called cloud services for a reason:)
