From what I've read I think it's clear that 1.0 is going to be discontinued entirely. That's why they're refunding the remainder of everyone's annual subscription. It looks like they're starting afresh with 2.0, and they want everyone to purchase a new subscription.

2.0 is currently in beta and it says on the website that as if this time, it's only available for Mac users. I can't find any information about if and when a Windows version will be available. For me, the way they're going about this is all wrong. They're treating their existing customers like crap. The least they could do is be upfront and unambiguous. Instead they're leaving us in the dark.

Is it within the ability of a data cloud service to transfer everyone's data to the new server themselves? Of course it is. They have that data and the means to transfer it. The fact that they're asking people to do it manually is awful. With Gobbler, it's not just a matter of your projects but also your revision history as well. Can you download all of your revisions? What would they look like? How would they be organized? I've relied on Gobbler to download earlier revisions many times. It's been nice having them there. I guess the lesson is, never rely on any of these cloud companies.

...and that could be why I don't.  The whole 'cloud' thing made me nervous from the very beginning, but that's just me...

once your data's in the cloud it's no longer yours

Can't we just get the data back from the NSA, through filing Freedom of Information requests?  (kidding)

I have thus far had ZERO reliance on cloud-based storage solutions, and that will likely be the case for the foreseeable future.

I DO use Gobbler to transfer projects to/from others, but not for any kind of backup solution.

I manually back things up and have multiple copies of data, both on-site and off-site, and that has never failed me.

I've always been leary using intertube based "cloud" type services for crucial backups because I am generally paranoid and skeptical by nature but after a brief skimming of the OP and some of the followups I gotta say that's some poorly thought out business maneuverings. Generally I've been pretty pleased or outright blown away with Cakewalk's third party affiliation choices and their contributions to the overall package and I get the general impression that it is all very well thought out and intentioned. I also like that there seems to be a focus on some of the extremely high quality underdogs on the market whose products may not otherwise get the recognition they deserve if it weren't for said partnerships. I kind of figured Gobbler, despite me not using them to date, fell into that same category and I'm sure the Bakers must have been inclined to think they were a stable, quality and scrappy upstart but this truly is setting a bad precedent (especially the part about Windows support... WTF?!). Can't win them all I guess but might I suggest Cakewalk consider sending a warning out to all registered customers about this and posting an official stickie on the matter? I've seen quite a few users mentioning they use it and it would be terrible if they lost any data unawares of the situation.

Thanks for posting this, sharke and as well to Craig for attempting to follow up with Gobbler. Despite my hesitation and disinclination to use cloud services I had been considering taking advantage of the Gobbler integration or just creating an account and moving my data over to them manually because other services (who shall remain nameless) have proved to be a disappointment themselves as far as sharing and ease of access. Shame on Gobbler for inconveniencing those who took a chance on their service and for sullying Cakewalk's reputation of steering users to quality third party providers... in this case to the point of coding your service RIGHT INTO THEIR PROGRAM!! I can only imagine the ensuing fury at Baker headquarters over this.
Otherwise I hope all are well. I have something brewing in my own demented workshop for my fellow Sonarites. Until then take care and best wishes. PS: Loving the new site layout. I have been watching from afar despite my silence. Cheers.

This is exactly why I don't use any cloud services and likely never will.

I hope that there will be a recommended course of action for sonar users :-)
