I'm using an ASIO driver with an outboard interface (USB Dual Tube Pre by ART). I only hear the noise running X1

What's the level in control panel ----> sound ----> properties ----> recording?  What's the asio driver?  Art doesn't give you one...

try http://asio4all.com/

and make sure you set up your sound card, according to your manual.  Which you will find on this website somewheres...

Then ofcourse, getting that stuff functioning in Sonar is textbook, and tedious at the same time...  It takes a couple of open and closings of Sonar..  You might wanna do a reboot...

@Reeks, greyzer - that sounds weird.

What is the simplest way to reproduce it, so we can try, too?

What does the tone sound like? Can you identify a specific frequency, or is it more broadband high hissing?

If only a single tone, can you tell whether it is a pure tone or can you tell whether it has harmonics (squarewave)

Is it a steady tone or does it vary in some way?

I had this happen to me once a couple of months ago with a MOTU 828.
In my case the problem wasn't SONAR related at all. It turned out that power cycling the the MOTU interface got rid of the noise. I leave my machine and interface on for weeks and somehow it had got into a bad state.
If you are comparing with another program like 8.5 make sure that you are checking it with the same audio settings and sample rate. If you can repro this even after a power cycle of everything it may be something else. If you are using WDM/MME/WASAPI you will need to reprofile. Also try different buffer sizes (latency).

Yes, it is of course important to have the same settings, latency (buffer) etc. Still, I would expect crackling, dropouts, etc. But a high-pitched whine? Very strange...

I have two more questions:

Is the interference loud compared to the recorded sound? Can you see it if you zoom int?

and secondly, if you export the track on its own and then listen to it in, say, windows media player - do you still hear it?

It's a steady high pitched whine. It's not a track that it does it on. I can open up blank project and still hear the eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. It's not as loud as recorded material. It also came up when I go to the record panal in the control panal. Those are the only times I hear it. I don't know if it's some kind of weird feedback or what but it is ANNOYING. Oh yeah, Linear Phase,  I've done all the asio4all.com stuff about 5 times. No go. My next stop will be to go ART support for help.

You could have a bum interface.   I bought mine from sweetwater, didn't work, I sent it back, they sent me a replacement, I'm still not thrilled with it.  I can't record guitar without massive feedback, although..  I haven't even bothered checking Sonar yet..  my conclusions are based on Reaper, Ableton, Guitar Rig and Amplitube stand alone's, and finally Renoise...

So, just fyi, I am stuck with an ART too, I think they are ok, and certainly not, "great devices."   I most likely, will never purchase an ART anything again...

Certainly, I have to buy a new interface soon..

I have the same thing when I run a file in sonar.
Sonar itself doesn't do it. It starts when I open a file.
Nor does it happen with other programs unless they include sound.
I also get it when I listen/watch a video, say, on youtube.
It does not increase with the volume fader.

I wondered if the sound card was picking up a hard drive sound or some other gear I have but it is definitely related to using the sound card.
How would you record this to post a sample without feed back?

This is common with onboard soundcards because they don't have the necessary shielding to prevent the RF interference. I suggest you use an outboard soundcard and the noise will go away.

@Grayzer , is the bass track the same the same bit depth as the other files, and is sonar set to the same bit depth when you Import the tracks ?

I also recommend that you patch sonar to X1d. If you want you could take a short clip of it and post it up for ppl to try it out on they'r daw to figure out the issue.
