Hi guys,
 
I just upgraded to the X3 and one MAJOR difference I'm having trouble with is when I record over the same track.
 
For example on X2:
 
1. I record the first minute of the song
2. I stop after finishing
3. I move the marker back to about :45 seconds
4. I press record and listen until the time comes to record the 2nd part and start playing
 
Here, in step 4, I see a flat red line going over the first recording, indicating that recording has begun and I can hear the first part playing.
 
On X3, this doesn't happen. I can't overlay and hear the first part. Pressing record over the first part deletes it! What the hell? Am I supposed to create new tracks for each and every part now?
 
I'm sure I'm missing something basic here but I DO NOT LIKE how X3 is behaving. Essentially like a cassette recorder. All the Sonars I've had allowed me to record right over existing tracks, without deleting them. This allowed me to trim down my tracks where I'd have multiple recordings on the same track, keeping things clean. 
 
I hope somebody can help point me to the right place here.

If you record a bunch of things on one track, wouldn't that mean all the panning, EQ and effects would have to be the same for all those parts? Wouldn't it give you more flexibility to use a new track for each new part?

Yeah I only do this for guitars or keyboard. Say, a solo that's complicated (for me) and I need to record it in separate sections. Each section can be just a few seconds that's why I need to listen closely to the track so I don't miss my cue and more importantly, the flow.

Well you have the choice of Sound on Sound, which does what you want, but you also have Comping mode which is new to X3. Not sure how relevant it is to your particular way of working, however if you're into comping the implementation is really quite slick. I found it confusing at first; fortunately, I had the presence of mind to read the documentation.  The Speed Comping mode in particular is my favorite.

Ok, I'm able to record over the track without deleting it but while doing so, I can't hear it and I keep missing my cue.
 
I've decided to just clone the track and alternate recording the parts between them.
 
Messy solution but I guess it'll have to do for now. 

The record mode setting is a per-project setting. Change the normal.cwt or which ever templates are used for project creation to set the default record mode setting to your requirements. If you need to hear previously recorded material use Sound on Sound.
