  • Best way to "Pitch Shift" ACID Loops?

Hi All

After the great advice on this forum I pulled the trigger on the Nine Volt Audio "Going Out Of Business" ACID Loop pack, which is huuuuge

I don't usually use loops to build tracks but I thought I would have a bit of a play

What would be the bast way of changing the pitch of loops to get them all in the same key or to follow chords?

I have SONAR X3 Producer so is there a particular method that is best to use?

I also have KONTAKT so am I best using this?

Properly acidized files have pitch information embedded (except for drums). Set SONAR's project pitch to the music's key, then insert pitch markers to tell the files when to change chords.

AWESOME!

Thanks CRAIG

I had played around with the project pitch but got weird results - didn't know about the pitch markers

I will now investigate and have a play

Thanks so much for responding so quickly

No problem, here's a tip about pitch markers.

Suppose you have a chorus where there are a lot of chord changes, so you've inserted a bunch of markers. Now you have another chorus where you need the same pitch markers. You don't need to enter them again; drag across the timeline containing the pitch markers, then choose Copy Special and include Markers. Now place the now time where you want to paste them, then paste. Bingo!

Oh, and if the acidization was sub-standard and pitch isn't embedded:

1. Determine what the "native" key is.
2. Open it in the loop construction window, enable Pitch, and enter the native pitch in the Pitch field.

This all sounds too good to be true! - can't wait to have a play

Another reason for the great call on going for the ACID option (your advice swayed me from the REX versions) so also thanks again for that

Well, you use the technology that's appropriate. I just did a bunch of bass loops with highly defined note attacks, so I repeated them in all keys to avoid pitch shift issues, and formatted them as REX files.

Be aware that pitch transposition is NOT a panacea and is difficult to do in real time. The further the transposition, the worse it sounds, especially with some instruments (like bass).

In those cases, here's another tip. After your arrangement is more or less done, make sure the clip isn't transposed and bounce it to itself. This converts it into a standard WAV file but that doesn't matter because the arrangement is done and you won't need to change its tempo any more. At this point, use the Transpose DSP function and you can change the pitch with much higher fidelity.

There are soooooooo many cool things you can do with Acidized clips, few people are aware of how fortunate we are that SONAR is only one of two programs that allows editing them.

If you're into any kind of EDM, especially electro, you need to know this groove clip technique.

If you wish to change the pitch on the fly use pitch markers. They are a revelation.

I'm going to do today's tip of the week as a grab bag of Groove Clip tips, and include a couple of these so they don't get lost when this falls off the front page.
