  • The Dilemna Of Using The FX-Bypass Button To Help With MIDI Latency

Hello Everyone,

I have a bunch of effects loaded into my project which is making playing a MIDI keyboard that routes to a softsynth to be impossible because of the huge delay the latency is causing.

If I hit the "FX" button to switch off all the project's FX, it resolves the issue, but I *NEED* those effects as they are controlling so much and also taming things that sound aweful without the FX (especially my drums).

Does anyone have any ideas or work arounds?

Thank You,
Adam

Bounce down a mix, temporarily archive all the tracks and record the new tracks using the temp mix.

First of all, there may only be one or two effects that are responsible for the latency. SONAR compensates for these so that all the audio lines up correctly. If you bypass only these effects, the rest can remain. Typically, these are effects with long "look-ahead" times. The Waves Maximizers, Cakewalk TS-64 transient shaper, and other dynamics processors typically exhibit this behavior. Bypass these, or replace them temporarily with equivalents that don't have look ahead.

Second, if all else fails, bounce your tracks to create a premix and play to that. Then you can bypass all your effects while you lay down your part.

Or just disable all the FX while you record your synth track so that your latency is as low as possible while recording, then freeze that synth and turn your effects back on to keep mixing.

If you have any other unfrozen synths make sure to freeze them as well...

Try hitting the PDC button to temporarily disable latency compensation. You'll probably hear the tracks with that need it will be out of sync. Bounce those tracks temporarily and record your MIDI with PDC off.
