  • Matrix view won't play MIDI synths

I opened up a project in X3e and tried to use the Matrix View today - the audio clips play back, but none of the MIDI clips do. At first I thought it was because one used a drum map, but then I tried with other clips and they have no drum map - but nothing makes any sound. The little playback circle starts filling in for the expected duration but nothing comes out. The original clips play back perfectly in the Track View timeline.

Anybody know what is going wrong here? These are standard synth tracks (not instrument) with output audio tracks assigned as expected.

I'm assuming you do, but just in case, do you have synth setup to output to?

I haven't tried matrix view so I don't know if there is any chance for making errors but have you checked a tutorial video about matrix view in case you make some small mistake.

I said in my original post that there are audio tracks assigned and that they play fine in the track view.

Turns out no MIDI clips play unless I click the 'D' button to set the row to 'Direct' - but the MIDI tracks in question have no processing to be bypassed! This also doesn't work for my drum track which uses a drum map - there is no 'D' button there to be clicked.

Any ideas?

Bump! I would really like some insight into what is going on here. A bit more experimentation clouds the issue further - some synths only seem to work when you patch them directly (eg. Dimension Pro, Majken's Chimera, Superior Drummer without a drum map), some seem to work whether they go direct or not (Kontakt), and some never seem to work (Superior Drummer with a drum map).

Are these known problems? Am I missing something?

Hi  Ben,

I hope you don't mind a couple of more questions, but are the MIDI loops themselves, that is the notes themselves, are in the proper range (pitch if you will) to line up with your drum map?  Further, is the MV row where the loop(s) is inserted routed to the desired MIDI track?

Ii have used the Matrix View quite often with expected results, including drum mapping, etc.  I have had to rearrange the notes in the PRV to match things up properly, however.

Hit back and I will duplicate your steps myself for further trouble shooting.

Kind regards,

I am dragging loops that work perfectly fine in Track View into the Matrix View. That means (a) the notes are correct, and (b) Sonar should be setting the output correctly.

Are your MIDI loops routed through the drum map when inserted into the TV?

Superior Drummer is, the others are not.
