  • Cakewalk Sonar - The Rodney Dangerfield of DAWs? (p.3)

How can anyone take a poll seriously if it allows voting multiple times?

SONAR wins awards...worth more than poll results, IMHO.

Personally though, if I used a DAW and was happy that had 0.000001% popularity I wouldn't care less.

People can argue forever about what is best, but going by sales and popularity alone, it is weird to exclude Sonar while including FL Studio and Reaper which are less common (though well-respected).

I am familiar with Bitwig, but then again, I read all the trade magazines.  It is certainly not a contender for most popular.

i think ProTools, Sonar, Logic, Cubase, Ableton, Studio One, and Reason (in whichever order you like) seem to be the major players.  I don't know where Digital Performer is these days in terms of use, but maybe it's on the list.

Anyway, these polls are about as valid as the Facebook tests to see which medieval king you are or which planet fits your personality.

Reaper is another well used DAW, runs on both PC and MAC platforms.
So that Logic is MAC only versus Sonar PC only, is the argument on this particular Forum?
Bitwig is new and exciting, runs on Linux.

Perhaps a valid measure is to seek out a few hundred established top money earning DAW users(companies) and find out what is their DAW of choice.
Maybe, a scientific means of finding this out can never be achieved.
Its like asking who is the best professional ball player (pick a sport) and a so call expert might choose to leave out a particular person; and their goes a good 'barber shop' argument.

I never heard of Bitwig Studio. also Sampltude didn't make the list either.

Its odd that a survey should be so limited. Sort of skews the results.

Interestingly, the Sweetwater's winter 2015 catalogue has Sonar X3 and Bitwig on the same page, Sonar on top half, Bitwig the lower half.

"Rounik is the Executive Editor for AskAudioMag.com & the quarterly print magazine by the same name. As an Apple Certified Trainer for Logic (and a self-confessed Mac fanatic) he's taught teachers, professional musicians and hobbyists how to get the best out of Apple's creative software."

And that says it all...

That is very interesting, indeed.  Thank you Jim for posting that info.

SONAR is not on the radar of Mac enthusiasts, except those who want to know if it runs under Boot Camp (it does).

BTW FL Studio is very popular...but it's a very different kind of program.

Dome people have insecurity issues with DAWs.  If artist x doesn't use it or it doesn't rank high on a popularity poll there's gotta be something wrong with it.

They never list what DAWs are used on commercial CD jackets because most people don't care. There are lots of users who use more than one tool.

That is just Sweetwater's way of sticking Bitwig's market share in Cakewalk's face. :-) What could be if they had continue to develop Project 5.
