Things have improved quite a bit since X1d

Shift + left click in the track will change the edit filter, depending on where you click of course. i.e. Shift + left click on an envelope switches the edit filter to that envelope.
 
Shift + right click toggles the edit filter between the present and last selected state.

I just finished mixing a one hour documentary in X3 and I'm genuinely underwhelmed with it's workflow "improvements". I'm easily doing three times more clicks and modifier keys as I had to in 8.53. And, while automation and take lanes may have there place, being forced to use them is both a huge waste of time and screen real estate.

Please bring back single lane full editing and envelopes.

Envelopes are definitely still there with the improvement ( imho) that it's no longer possible to adjust the wrong one by mistake.

I do use lanes from time to time for multiple simultaneous edits but my preferred method is still in the main track.

Less said about layers the better really, again IMHO of course.

Yup...   Shift+Click (and possibly right-click) is your best bet in this case.
