I've searched the forums and the manual but can't seem to find the answer to this one:

How can I record MIDi CC data directly into an automation lane from a midi controller without recording it into the clip?

I've just started using a touch pad controller for record CC1 and CC11 while recording midi tracks. The controller data ends up in both the track and the envelope. I end up having to always convert the CC data into an envelope. I must be missing something. Does anyone know how I can record the CC data into the envelope only?

Automation lanes are a subset of the track. I don't quite understand what it is you want to accomplish, or what the problem is...if you could describe what it is you want to accomplish and why it's necessary not to have the automation in a clip, then there's probably some workaround you could do. For example, you could record into two tracks, and delete the notes in one and the controllers in the other.

Not sure I'm following either. If you record cc data into a track it is by definition going to end up in a lane and clip. You can record into a specific lane by arming that specific lane. But it still ends up in a track and a clip.

Sorry, I'm having trouble explaining. I really appreciate the responses!

When you record CC data it is recorded as MIDI data and is visible at the bottom of the Piano Roll. It is also overlaid on the clips as a series of controller messages.

Automation lanes can be shown below the track. The controller data in these lanes is separate from the messages in the PRV and clip. If you add an envelope after having recorded CC data, the envelope and the CC data in the track (Clip) will conflict. They are stored separately.

You can convert controller data to envelopes on the clip menu.

I want to record directly into the envelope and not have to convert the data stored in the track (clip).  Does that help explain it better?

Thanks again.

I don't think you can. You can record the cc data into a take lane but not into a chosen automation lane. You need to convert the cc data as you have been apparently.

I Believe it is possible to record CC data into an automation lane using remote control but if the MIDI track is recording, the CC data will also record in the take lane.

Thanks Karl and scook! I believe you've nailed it. The other thing I didn't mention is that I want to record 2 CC messages at the same time (i.e. CC1 and CC11). I'll just continue on and record into the track and convert to autmation for tweaking.

Thanks again!

I notice you appended a request to a generic thread in the features & ideas forum. You may get a better response by creating a separate request in that forum.

I've just had a play around with this again and I can't seem to get CC data recorded into an automation lane at all. I can record it into a take lane, and I can record automation into an automation lane but the only way I can record CC data is into a controller lane and then convert it to automation data.

I've had a good look around the settings but can see anything that would seem to relate to recording CC into an automation lane. Steve, am I missing a setting or something somewhere, that might save me some time i the future?

I should add that I am referring to record the data in real time from an external synth/controller not from Sonar's UI.
