The Coffee House Band recorded one tune with about 45 tracks of audio.

The track is nearly 11 minutes long.

Mind you some were only a few bars long and some were a few bars long in only two or three palces in the entire song.

But still it was a mixing nightmare. But it never caused 8.5.3 any real trouble. Nor did it fluster X2 in the final remix.

Not to mention a good 20 of those would be the bass player trying to get a good take......

"What are you dudes recording that takes 40 tracks? A symphony???"

Hmmm... I guess its poor housekeeping. I can't seem to throw anything away.
Really though, it's a mixture or midi and audio outtakes, mostly muted and hidden, but maybe they put a load on resources, I don't know.
Tomorrow I think I will have to begin clearing up.This particular project has been evolving over a long time, hence so many tracks.

Well, 8 tracks minimum for drums alone if you break them out (meaning not just 1 stereo track).
If you use 1 track each for toms, left OH, right OH instead of stereo; now you're up to at least 10.
Add some percussion and that's 12 or more.
Couple guitars (like that's enough), vocals, BGV.
Haven't even fired up the B3 or piano yet.
Adds up fast, that's why I/we love Sonar!
Just sayin'....
I do try to keep the busses at 8, but that's rarely enough.
But, at the risk of repeating myself, that's why I/we love Sonar!

Never grasped the concept of buffers.

This article that was just published in the Cakewalk blog might help.

Hey Craig, I've had issues with my Presonus audiobox 22vsl...where would you go to purchase the TASCAM US-2×2 ?
Thanks,
Randy

Couple of things:
  • Try increasing the size of your Picture cache.
  • Check to see how much RAM you're using on larger projects.
Depending on what's running (especially with virtual instruments that load/stream samples from RAM - like Superior 2.0), you may be running out of physical RAM.

As far as tracks...
If you're tracking harmony vocals, it's common practice to triple each part (to achieve that large/full "background" vocal sound).  Even though they're not playing thru the entire project, this can consume a lot of tracks.

  • Double tracked guitars
  • Acoustic Drums
  • Background vocals
  • Instrumental Hooks
  • Keyboards

With the great flexibility of a non-linear DAW, it's all too quick/easy to start piling up the tracks.
Unlike tape, you don't have hard limits (well... at least not at 24 or 48 tracks)
