  • Decided to try take lanes with auto punch. I'm stumped.

Sonar user for years but never tried take lanes. And after searching and reading through different posts maybe I shouldn't have tried to use this feature   When using comping I choose mute previous track since I don't want to hear the section that I'm trying to replace. After I'm done recording, all of the previous sections of each take that I'm working on are all muted (which makes sense since that is what I told Sonar to do). The problem is trying to un-mute them so that I can audition each take. I would think you could just click the section and manually un-mute - but that does not work (the section stays muted).  I've tried using the Mute tool and that sort of works but its extremely cumbersome and seems like a lot of extra work (since the only way I could do it is drag over the clip to select it). Am I missing something or do I need to change my workflow and/or not use Take Lanes? Seems like such a cool feature if I could just get past this one issue.  Thanks -Jim

I'm with you Jimo. I can see that it's probably a great feature, but I too can't get my head around it, tho tried many times. Sorry to be of little help :(

It's honestly probably one of the best features of X3 or any Sonar version. But it is very different from the way it was done before and if you haven't figured out how the smart tool works it seems impossible to work with. Rather than write another long post that will seem incomprehensible to you, I really really recommend finding a YouTube tutorial. Just do "Sonar X3 comping" or speed comping. A ten minute video made everything clear to me.

Or look for the X3 Comping video on this CakeTV page http://www.cakewalk.com/C...University/Get-Started

Thanks. I probably should have chose a different heading for the post . I really do understand comping and take lanes but the issue is (and the video didn't address this) is when using the auto punch feature the takes get muted in a strange way where even when you click on them to audition they are still muted (and the wave form changes to the "outlined" display) as opposed to just the whole clip being greyed out. If I don't use auto punch it all works as shown in the video.

So maybe I'm making this more difficult than it needs to be. Is there another way to use auto punch but at the same time having the part you are replacing NOT play while you are playing over it (if I'm replacing a section of a guitar solo I don't want to hear the messed up part but I do want to hear what is before and after it)? In other words I would like to just mute the section of the clip I am working on within the original clip (not mute the whole clip). When I use the mute previous track function is when I get that weird behavior explained above. Sorry its kind of hard to describe in words but hopefully makes sense.

I don't really use auto punch, but it seems to me you could select the appropriate section with the comping tool and hit k to mute the clip. Then use sound on sound mode to record.
