Metronome does not work at all in X3 pro (Xe build 352) /Win 8.1/lexicon Alpha.
It won’t hold my settings and there is no sound. I have set it to direct out and bus, tried many different setups.
It simply does not work at all.

*Metronome works fine in Sonar HS8 on same system.

Couple things to try here,
  • Go to Edit > Preferences (advanced) > Project > Metronome and make sure that you have both boxes ticked next to "Playback" and "Record". This could definitely disable Metronome functionality.Do you have "Use Audio Metronome" selected or "Use MIDI Note" selected in this window?
    • Are the drop down menus populated below "Use Audio Metronome"? The ones that say "First Beat" and "Other Beats"? If not get on a call with support - they should be able to help you work this out.
    • "Use MIDI Note" requires that you're using an actual MIDI device's output. This is essentially sending a raw MIDI note at whatever defined values you've set in the preferences. This only routes to the output port of your MIDI device - nowhere else really.
  • What's your tempo set to? Should default to 120. Is this correct?
  • Does this file exist on your computer? This is the actual instrument that is running your metronome in SONAR.
    • C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared DXi\Groove Player\GroovePlayer.dll

If you are using the audio metronome and the drop downs in the "Use Audio Metronome" are not populated in Preferences > Project > Metronome, try holding the SHIFT key while starting SONAR. This will copy the missing metronome files into your user directory.

 * Go to Edit > Preferences (advanced) > Project > Metronome and make sure that you have both boxes ticked next to "Playback" and "Record". YES
 Do you have "Use Audio Metronome" YES but it won’t even hold my setting. Retunes to default set.

 * Are the drop down menus populated below "Use Audio Metronome YES menus populated...

 * C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared DXi\Groove Player\GroovePlayer.dll Yes

also I'm running Win 8.1 in 64 bit.. if that matters... ?

These are per-project settings. Existing projects will need to be manually changed to custom settings. To have custom settings show up in new projects, the project templates need to be modified. SONAR uses the normal.cwt by default for new projects.

I had the same problem as the OP after a new installation and the above solved it.
