  • X3: Comp Multiple Tracks Simultaneously?

I'm well aware of Sonar X3's built-in comping capabilities but wondered if it was possible to perform these functions on two tracks simultaneously? If anyone is wondering why I want to do this, I have recorded a guitar part with two completely different tones at the same time, which means that comping is simply a case of doing one and then replicating my comping on the other. It's a bit of a time consuming process doing it like this though. I think there are probably other applications for this, for example an acoustic guitar that's been double or triple mic'd, room mics, overhead mics etc. Any advice or thoughts appreciated :)

Yes you can do this. You need to group the clips. Select them, right click and from the context menu select "Create selection group from clips".

For future ref you can do this at the recording stage. Set that option in Prefs--->Project--->Record---->Multi-track grouping.

Hi TMG,
+1 to FBB, I do multi-mic comping all the time and that's exactly the method I use. A couple possible "gotchas":

1. Unlike some other DAWs you may have used, Sonar seems to stream audio from all takes in a track regardless of whether they are muted. What this means is that if you have 10 drum kit tracks and each of them has 5 takes, even though only one take on each track is playing the disk is streaming all of them. This can quickly start to really hammer your HDD IO. If this happens the only real solution is archiving tracks.

2. Clip grouping leaves some things to be desired. There are any number of operations that can be performed on only one clip in a group if you don't first select (i.e., click on) a clip in the group first. For example, if I have 10 clips in a group and I want to slip-edit all of them, if I don't click on one of them to select it first I can slip edit one of the clips and the others will remain unchanged. Same thing applies to fades and any number of other things. Good rule: select a clip in a group before editing.

Good luck

Hi Dean,

Thanks for the thoughts. Since FBB's post I have been using the clip grouping extensively and have noticed exactly what you mention about the slip editing. I've also noticed that the same annoyance with fade outs/ins too. I can definitely see the merits of grouping the tracks before the record button is even hit, because that way whenever a clip group is split it's automatically assigned to a separate group which is very handy indeed.

Thank you both for the input, it's much appreciated. FBB you are a hero because you have saved me at least an hour of editing time just since your reply! Didn't notice your signature at first but I've watched most of the vids you've created, so ta for that too ;)

Cheers
