I'm working on some Big Band stuff for christmas. For some reason, I couldn't dial in the trumpets in respect to the rest of the brass - trumpets have a sharper bite than the others and it appears to be less loud when adjusted to same approximate volume.
 
I tried some equalization, played around a bit with the bus compressor, dicey results, but going to the prochannel concrete limiter did the trick. Really, just set the max out limit at -1db, then dial in the threshold to taste. Wow - that *was* a hell of a lot easier!

Yes, it is an awesome little tool! I've been using Waves L2 Ultramaximizer as my go-to limiter when I'm bringing up the overall volume on a finished track. Last week I updated my Waves plugins to the latest version...and all of my licenses are now lost. Pain in the butt. Instead of fussing with trying to get my licenses back (I will eventually, I just don't feel like dealing with it right now), I threw on the Concrete Limiter and let it do its thing. Man! I was blown away at how good it sounded. I think it does a better job than the L2. Waves makes some good stuff, but I think it's a bit overrated in some cases (and overpriced in most).

I've been assiduously avoiding Waves - mainly because of their prices. It's seems of late, they're running a lot of specials to keep their fingers in the native plug-in market. It might be that their prices for native plugins at one time kept pace with plugins-ins for hardware units (UAD, Avid..), but the native market is too hot.

I like the plugins that I have used from them - only about four or five - but I can't afford most of them. They do have some really nice sales though, and they are always tempting. But I usually resist by telling myself that I can always make the mixing plugins I have work for me, and I'd rather spend that money on new virtual instruments which are far more useful to me as a composer. I'm excited to see what kind of deals all the sample instrument companies have for Black Friday :D

I use the Concrete Limiter on about every project it seems. When I get a track that is unruly, it goes on first. It just works and to my ears leaves little color. I am waiting for the waves after Thanksgiving special if they have one this year. Last year Maxx Bass because I wanted to really get my learning on in that area. Its funny - when you get a new tool, it takes you school if you let it.

I'm thinking of Black Friday too, guys.  Looking to get a 64-bit convolution reverb - they work really well on some of the Orchestral and Big Band stuff I play with. Haven't used one in a while.
