Thanks for the input. The WASAPI driver mode seems to put things back to where they were and so I'm content. What's the difference between WASAPI and ASIO? I have the latest drivers installed from Roland. When I tried to apply ASIO it comes up that I'm missing Output devices and to reassign. Then when I look in preferences-devices- then input/output drivers section is empty. It seems to mess things up. I'm not sure how to correct. That being said, when I go back to WASAPI driver mode, everything seems ok. If it's not broke, why fix it? Feedback pls? And thanks...

WASAPI is a native windows driver and it cannot perform any where near as good as the proper ASIO driver supplied by Roland. Roland writes top notch drivers.
You need to do as Beagle has advised. You should not have the issues you mentioned with the missing outputs and blank driver boxes. Something is causing that to happen and THAT is what we need to help you resolve. And it can be resolved. You'll thank everyone here once you sort this out.
This sounds like your Roland drivers are not installing properly or you have not set the Roland as your default audio device etc.
Sometimes the presence of other drivers will make the ASIO drivers go off line.

And re reading your answer..  the message about the output devices , that happens when you have used a different audio interface and change sometimes. Say if the old one used a different naming system ?? Anyhow I'm thinking what I would do is
1- Go to the Roland Website and double check that you have the most up to date driver that matches your OS ( 64 bit etc)  Make sure you always use the same USB port you used to install the drivers.
2- If it's possible, I've not familiar with WASAPI, un install it completely.
This might involve disabling your on board audio. You can always re enable again.
If you have a nvida video card then the HD driver needs to be disabled. read  post # 56

If you have asio4all nuke 101% completly,  this is truth, don't listen to others...
If you have any Creative driver nuke them too... more truth...
3- Open Windows Audio devices and set the Roland as the default audio device.
4- Open Sonar / Preferences/ Audio and set to ASIO, re start Sonar.
You should now see the Roland as your ASIO device and as your timing master  (the root of your issue)
If you get the re assign outputs, then do that, check your master is set to the Roland 1/2 for each project as you re open them. Once set those projects will work forever. I've had mine reset when I open old projects created with another interface, this is normal.

I've gone through the steps. I've only used the UA-25 with this present computer so there hasn't been another audio interface. In my windows audio devices the UA-25 is the default in/out. I'm not sure how to uninstall the WASAPI. When I change over to ASIO in Pref/Audio/Playback&Recording, and then restart Sonar, I first get a notice that (before Sonar opens) ... there are no audio devices/go to edit/pref/choose a different driver. So I open Sonar and ASIO is showing but no sound. In edit/pref/driversetting/ the playback and recording timing master section is blank. This is where I'm uncertain of how to correct this. Thanks JohnnyV for your assistance so far.

there's almost always another "audio interface" - unless you bought a motherboard without a "soundcard" then your computer DOES have another "audio interface."  as far as windows and sonar are concerned, it does not matter if the soundcard is just a chip on the motherboard or a UA-25 or a $10,000 Digidesign desk.  they're ALL soundcards with inputs and outputs.

but I also stress again, and Johnny did as well:

Thanks Beagle, You're explanation about another audio card makes sense, but I'm still not sure what to do in order to make the driver mode ASIO. In my windows audio devices it does show that the UA-25 is both the default in/out.  It shows up ASIO in edit/audio/playback&recording. But the driver settings is showing blank in the audio/driver settings/playback,recording timing master. It says that the audio outputs have to be reassigned. This is where I'm stuck. How to reassign the audio outputs?

Also, when I edit/audio/devices, there is nothing showing to reassign ...

Ah!  that sounds EXACTLY like what was happening to me the other day!  I did a windows update.  it updated twice and had me reboot twice.  after that my MOTU started doing EXACTLY the same thing you're describing.  I could use it in WDM driver mode, but if I changed it to ASIO, it left the playback and recording masters BLANK and I couldn't select anything and there was nothing to reassign the outputs to!

I"m on win7x64 and the update was last week.  I had to restore a backup point from windows before I installed those updates to get it working again.

My computer is set to automatically update windows. There was even an update today. But that hasn't changed anything. The playback/recording timing masters are still blank. Any other suggestions to get ASIO my default driver mode? I went to this site ... http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Knowledge-Base/Audio-Hardware-Setup-Guide?audioMake=Roland&audioModel=UA-25EX&product=SONAR+3+Producer but not sure when it says go to "options-audio-advanced" Still working on it ...
