If there is any kind of serious purpose for the piece you're creating I would say record an actual sax player. Instruments like those just don't lend themselves well to being played from a keyboard (or midi). There are too many variables affecting the timbre all the time that you can't model with samples.

I'm more inclined to go with Mettelus' suggestion of solving it a different way entirely.

Thanks all for the great responses.  My objective is not a matter of life and death or even going hungy for a while.  I am only fiddling around with  and trying to learn  for the sake of learning and having fun doing it.  Consequently I am not pressed to get a particular sound.  Instead I simply am wondering what I can expect out of plugins and pre-sets etc. My digital piano does produce a pretty good synthetic Sax at least to my ears. Hence, I figured there exists an ADSR in one of the soft synths settings that'll get close. Meanwhile I have continued to try different  synths and different instrumentation and, as I said yesterday, I am getting a kick out of what can be done.  The  power of Sonar X3, so far, seem limitless.

try "Linplug saxlab 2", its realy good and has a control for growl, works well in sonar x3. also using it with my Akai ewi usb!
the demo is the full program but it puts a burst of white noise in ever 40 seconds, other than that you get to try it out and see if it what you want! it a lot cheeper than "sax brothers!"wont let me post a link as i'm a new member!

well worth a look!

A few things, the gmeidia Mellotron has a decent sounding sax.  I'm not sure about Dim Pro, but it should have.  If you want a growling sound have a listen to King Crimson and their Islands period Mel Collins is a great sax player, if I remember correctly chucking it through a marshal stack is how they got that sound.  So use guitar rig if you have it.

I found that saxlab2 worked really good as a VST in sonar x3, and there over 30 diffrent sax voices, but I got it more for playing my Akai ewi and getting that real sax sound! better than Garritan! think after the "sax brothers sample modling" it the next best thing! and only 1/3 of the price! try the demo out in sonar and you be suprised at the control you have over your sax voice. i love it!

I got the old Halion Sonic and it has also nice sax sounds. I remember that there is some kind of sax growl patches too.

Best thing to do is go the closest college and find the best sax player there.  Ask him/her to play the part for you.  That, there is a lot more fun than trying to get a synth to sound something like you want.

Mr Sax is good.  The newer product by the same company is just called "Saxophones" and has a collection of a bari, tenor, alto, and soprano.

I think the key is getting a smplae library that has a growly articulation based on volume or controller.  A couple of hardware synths I have do that pretty well.
