I've been trying to find a way to make my automation edits cleaner and less time consuming.

Usually I would create 4 nodes (2 in front and 2 behind) the material I am automating. Then I would adjust the level. That can be time consuming. Is there a faster way to do this (some type of key command and mouse combination)?

Thanks

This is dead easy. With the automation line selected in the edit filter, left click and drag across the time range you want to change. Then move your mouse pointer to the top of the clip. You'll see the mouse pointer turn into a different symbol. Click and drag up or down to adjust the envelope in the time range you selected. Automatically adds the four nodes for you, so it's easy to tweak after the fact.

You'll probably find you need to expand the lane height a little for this to work. When it's at minimum height that useful little icon sometimes doesn't appear.

You also need it expanded to add more precision to your edits

I marked John T's post as helpful—and I was sincere—but I actually can't get this to work.  No matter what I do, the cursor will pull the volume envelope up or down, but only between existing nodes.  It is not affected by the time selection and it does not add nodes.  Is this new in X3?

I just tried it in X1d Producer Expanded and it worked OK.
  • Created new project
  • Dropped an audio loop in a track
  • Set the edit filter to Automation > Volume
  • Drag across the timeline to select a portion of the audio loop
  • Move the cursor to anywhere above the volume automation line in the audio track, the cursor should change to a double-headed cross. Click-drag will create new nodes and adjust volume envelop.

Yes, thanks: it works now.  The key was NOT putting the cursor on the envelope but above it or below it.  I appreciate the help.  This will save me big time.
