Even easier: Save as - give it new name. Delete everything but the drums on new file - done.

I don't think that works. That would link all the audio data of the old project to the new one. You need to delete everything unwanted first, before saving under new name, as I wrote in my previous post. Deleting the tracks does not delete the audio in the audio folder.

My experience:

Tracks do not copy.  Audio/midi data does.
Tracks to not export/import. Audio data does. (and midi, and groove clips,...)

None of the track settings copy/export/import.

!!!!   If you can do this please explain how.   !!!

Been asking for this forever. Like since 1999.

Should be able to save track templates with data.

Should be able to combine projects.

)))Save as to a new name AND new folder: takes the related audio with it.(((

Based on my limited experience of such copying, I agree. I just blindly assumed that there's a way in the X-series to copy-paste tracks with all the settings, envelopes etc., as the experienced forum members suggest it. I'm still in 8.5.

You're correct, I was sloppy in my language and used "track" and "data in the track" interchangeably.

The only way I know of to copy a track, its parameters, and its data from one project to another is to save the track as a track template and copy the data into that.

It would be unbelievably useful to be able to copy a track and everything that goes with it to another project.

Example: if you had a soft synth part, it would be great to copy the track, the soft synth (VI), and all settings to another project.

Konradh,

The synths are usually not actually part of the track.

Interestingly, you can include them in a track template, so Craig's suggestion of a Track Template still works. You could export the track and audio to track template and import it into any number of projects you like.

It will come with all the stuff, FX, Synths, whatever. It will route to the same busses it did in the original.

Seems pretty close to what you're asking for to me.

Reading this thread gave me an idea for a different way of copying clips between projects. I had been opening both projects, copying the desired clip, switching to the other project using the Window menu, and then pasting.

I realized that I could use the button between the maximize and minimize button to size the track view of both projects so that they can fit side by side in Sonar. Then it's easier to drag and drop.

It would be even better if there was some way to undock the track view and drag it to another monitor.

Yup - the Track Template saves all but the clip data, and it all shows up when you insert from the Track Template.  I use Track Templates all the time, and they are great time savers for me.

You cannot undock the track view but I believe you can stretch SONAR across both monitors and move one of the track views to the other monitor that way.

Clear away everything and show the desktop
Windows logo key +D
Use this shortcut when you want to minimize a lot of open windows at once to check something on your desktop. Clutter-to-clean with two fingers.

Manage open windows
Chances are, you use your PC to do a lot of things at once. Shortcuts go a long way towards cutting the clutter. Go ahead and try these out as you read about them.

  • Switch between open windows
    Alt+Tab
If you have lots of open windows and you're not sure exactly which one you need, press Alt+Tab, and get a quick thumbnail view of all open windows. Then, while holding down the Alt key, press the Tab key multiple times until you get to the window you want.

  • Minimize the window
    Windows logo key +Down Arrow
Minimizing a window is a surefire way to see what's underneath it. And it's fast to use the shortcut. If the window is maximized already (covering the entire screen) it'll go to “normal” size. And if it's normal size, it'll minimize entirely.
  • Maximize the window
    Windows logo key +Up Arrow
Maximizing windows works the same way.
