  • Most efficient way to do your own vocal takes?

I would rather do my vocal takes standing up, which forces me to kinda go back and forth from microphone to the PC Keyboard, which ends up varying the distance between the pop filter and my mouth with different takes. Should I just accept it? Do you guys have any secret device (holding) that controls the STOP/RECORD functions?

My keyboard/mouse is wireless so I just take the keyboard and or mouse with me. All my recording is in the same room so it works fine.

I have AC-7 Core HD on my iPad, which works well, but most of the time I use a wireless keyboard.

How about loop recording if you want multiple takes?

+1 on wireless keyboards and comping.

I record my vocals the same way as you: standing up, same room as the DAW. I use a wireless keyboard, but I don't really have to bring it with me to the microphone. I have a big black windscreen on a gooseneck in front of the mic, which makes it easy to position myself the same distance every time, or close enough, anyway. Also, since the comping feature in X3 I've been doing multiple complete takes, so there's less running back and forth.

Yeah the comping slows down the number of trips back and forth a WHOLE bunch.  :)

I record one verse or half a verse at a time using punch in looping. The loop starts conveniently about two measures before the vocals. I record maybe two-four takes in a row, and then do some audiotioning to make sure I'm on the "right tracks".
Sometimes I record one phrase at a time taking a dozen takes in a row.
As my lips are practically touching the pop-shield, the distance to the mic doesn't vary. My routines during the louder parts are fairly fixed so that the volume is not a problem.

Control surface with a footswitch works for me. Especially useful once I've got myself positioned behind several mics perched on a stool ready for an acoustic guitar take. Trying to get in and out used to result in banging mics and all sorts of hassle.

I also have a wireless keyboard. They are cheap enough nowadays and you can have more than one keyboard attached to a system.

Here's an idea :  turn a keyboard into a foot controller.

This is one of the many reasons I want to see a proper mobile app developed for Sonar. Especially when I get my new isolation chamber, I don't want to have to keep running out of the booth to use the transport controls or to do small edits.
