  • [Solved] Help Please - Input Monitoring / Playback Difficulties

This is more than likely just me being stupid, but I've got a couple things going on here I just can't sort out.

I setup to do a comping vocal take but when I tried to echo the input on the track I was recording on, Track 14, I could not hear myself (This is not the first time I've had difficulty setting up simple input monitoring using the track's Input Echo button).  After noodling around with things for a bit I turned on the Input Echo from the control bar mix section (input monitor everything) and there was the live mic.  Then I started turning off individual track Input Echo, track by track.  Weirdly, when I got to track 14 and turned its off Input Echo, input monitoring for the live mic persisted.  I didn't freak out too much, maybe another track was setup for the same input device and I was hearing through there.  I continued working my way down the tracks and when I got to Track 29 and turned off Input Echo, I could no longer hear the input.  OK.  Turned off Input Echo for the remaining tracks and went back to Track 14 and turned on Input Echo.  Nothing.  Turned on Input Echo for Track 29 and there it was.  The only Track record enabled was Track 14.  So I just resigned that I would have to monitor Track 29 input to hear what I was recording on Track 14.

Did several takes and sat back down to audition.  There they were, T1 through T19 recorded into Track 14.  But now, on playback, I can't hear any of the Track 14 takes.  I can see all the waveforms from the takes but no audio out.  The track is routed to master.  The level meter for the track shows nothing happening in the track.  I can hear 2 other tracks I recorded on also routed to master.

By the way, this project file was started using a CWT template from another project I was working on.

Any ideas?  Thanks.

Leaving aside the input routing issue, the lack of anything in the track meter on playback is significant I suspect.

Clips or take lanes all muted?

Track gain set so low it's silencing the track?

Something in a plugin/pro channel reducing pre-fader volume to zero so the track fader does nothing? Try disabling all effects (press E hotkey) and see what happens.

Track fader in offset mode maybe?

@tlw,

Grateful for your reply and your brilliant suggestion.  Since my last post I deleted all but the 3 active tracks in the project, 2 acoustic guitars and one vocal mic.  The problem persisted - no audio from the vocal track (now track 3).
  • Nothing muted, nothing soloed
  • Track Gain set to 0.0
  • All effects off
  • Offset Mode - DAMMIT!!  Yes...  I must have fat fingered that somehow.  I never intentionally use it so I never think of it.  This is a lesson I'll remember, I promise, and all the way from the UK at the end of the day!  Cheers!  Next pint's on me.
I want a big yellow flashing LED in my track header punching me in the face with Offset Mode Status...

With an open project consider going into Preferences > Customization > Keyboard Shortcuts Global Bindings area and search for "Do Nothing" then bind the letter O to "Do Nothing...." This will prevent accidentally enabling Offset mode with the default keyboard shortcut.

To view the Keyboard Shortcuts make sure the Advanced radio button is selected at the bottom of the Preferences UI.

Awesome.  And done.  Many thanks, Steve.
