The hold down shift with cursor over works here. You are def on X3 (as per your sig?). The hot spot appears to be toward the top of the cursor.

The shift and left click to switch def works whether the edit filter has pre used before or not. Obviously it doesn't create the envelope but if for example I create automation via my control surface I can shift + left click on the envelope to shift focus to it without going near the edit filter.

Shift + right click switches between the last two edit filter states.

Yep thanks mate, got that sorted now, it works as you said IF cursor is over ghosted envelope

def on X3e :)

I'm confused what you mean by... "The hot spot appears to be toward the top of the cursor."
But I'm burnt out and going to bed, maybe a "epiphany light bulb" will eliminate in the morning.

Thanks to Craig and Karl for all the input on this subject. I just hope I don't dream of Edit filter/Automation/Volume-Pan/ Envelopes/Left click/Right click and so on, and wake up in the morning feeling like crap and needing a good nights sleep. Goodnight world!

Goodnight..... or should that be Good morning if you are now reading this?  Sorry if I confused you. What I meant and should have explained better is that the envelope in relation to the cursor needs to be in the upper half of the cursor with the shift key held down. Move the cursor above the ghosted envelope, hold down the shift key and the drag the cursor down over the ghosted envelope fairly slowly.

You should get the popup when you hit the spot. Once you know where it is it's relatively easy to hit it straight away.

What a difference a good nights sleep makes
So what I have learned thus far is...

  • Hold shift down and drag cursor over envelopes, an info pop-up on data type will appear when you hit the sweet spot of envelope, keep doing this until you find envelope you want to edit.
  • Keep holding shift down, Left-Click and selected envelope will become in focus (Un-Ghosted)
  • Amend envelope and when finished Shift+Right-Click and selected envelope will ghost again
  • If you Shift+Left-Click a ghosted envelope and then immediately Shift+Left-Click on another ghosted envelope then Shift+Right-Click now switches between the last two edit filter states instead of ghosting envelope. Note... (it seems the only way to now ghost all envelopes is to use the edit filter?? but I'm not curtain on that)
I agree with Craig, automation was hell when they were all bunched up on the same track and I too at times use a lot of automation (Ozone 5 Advanced) but on a lot of tracks I just want a volume envelope and it would be nice to press a binding and “hey presto” its there and ready to edit instead of Edit filter/Automation/Volume. I can feel a new feature request coming on.

Anyway I'm so glad I started this post, I've learnt a bunch of stuff that will improve my work flow big time.

Me too, and thanks for summarizing everything in a tidy little set of bullet points

Also once you have a envelope in focus (Un-ghosted or in Automaton Lanes)
  • Alt+Left-Click lets you draw freehand
  • Ctrl+Left-Click lets increment or decrement envelopes between a set of nodes
  • Alt+Shift+Left-Click draws a straight line

Yes, in order to ghost all envelopes something else needs to be selected by the Edit Filter.  For me that's typically clips, but it could also be transients for audio or IPRV for MIDI.

Also, I don't see this mentioned, but if you do want to access the Edit Filter dialog itself you don't have to use the widget in the track.  Keeping your location in the Clips Pane, you can also use the "T" key or middle mouse button.  I personally have a side mouse button mapped to it for convenience.

Yes this what I'm doing, all part of the bunch of stuff that's improved my work flow big time.

Look what I found hiding in plain sight, a binding to open a volume envelope.

Cool!  That's good to hear, because that's really what all of this is about.
