Craig Anderton's Sonar column in the most recent issue of Sound on Sound had a lot of good advice about metering.
 
One sentence in the article has made a huge difference for me.  If you right-click on the peak value in a track or bus, you can select Go to Peak and Sonar will take you to the place the peak occurred.
 
This is extremely useful for me when mixing.  I may have a mix that hovers around (for example), -3.5 but hits a brief peak somewhere of, say, -2.4 somewhere.  Before, I froze my eyes on the meter as the song played hoping to figure out where the peak happened.  (And, of course, if you fast bounce, that's not even an option.)
 
Now I can quickly find the peak on Master and also find the peaks on various suspect tracks.

Just remember that it doesn't hit exactly on the peak because of the tolerances due to framing times. But it will put you within 40 ms, and you can identify the peak visually at that point.

Thanks for refining that, Craig.  So far it has been close enough for rock n roll, because once I get within a half-second or second, it's usually pretty clear what's happening.  All good.
