Yeah, I remember it being quite tedious! Had to program each of the 8 channel strips 3x (for each bank) plus the ACT transport controls. Using your plugin mgr tip, it only took a few minutes to get everything working. Whew.. did NOT want to repeat all that - thanks again! I think I paid $20-$30 for the Korg nanoKontrol but it's a pretty useful little USB CS.
Even cheaper (not counting the Android tablet/phone ) is Humanic's Touch DAW. This $5 (and there's a very useful free version too) app emulates a Mackie Control 1 surface (and more) and implements MIDI over WiFi, Bluetooth, and USB tether. The author has now introduced "MidiHub" for the PC side so no 3rd s/w like rtpMIDI is needed anymore. Very cool!
