  • How can I migrate control surface settings from 8.5p to x3p?

Against the advice of many folks I know who have abandoned Cakewalk, I recently caved and upgraded to X3p. I had a control surface set up for the Korg nanoKONTROL and had all the Generic controls and transport settings saved for in 8.5. The control surface file is called "nano" and I found it buried in a "cakewalk\shared presets" folder under my Windows User Profile on my old DAW. I tried to copy it to the same folder on the new DAW AND also to c:\Program Data\Cakewalk\Shared Presets   but it never shows up in the list of Control Surface presets that I can load. I would hate to have to reenter it all. How can I migrate these settings?

Long time since I visited here. Can't say I like what they've done with this place.

If it's a saved preset for the ACT MIDI Controller or the Cakewalk Generic Surface Controller, you can use the Cakewalk Plug In Manager to go to the Control Surface section in the Plug In Manager, click on whichever controller it's a preset for, and export from 8.5 and import it to X3 using the Cakewalk Plug In Manager.

Hope that helps.

That worked, thank you! I was able to export both the generic (console) and ACT (transport) settings I had saved as "nano" in 8.5 on the old DAW and into X3 on the new machine. I'd never used the Cakewalk Plug-in Manager before. It's always cool to learn something new.

It's good to hear you're good to go. It's a bummer to have to keep setting up a control surface from scratch, so I know how you must feel.

Yeah, I remember it being quite tedious! Had to program each of the 8 channel strips 3x (for each bank) plus the ACT transport controls. Using your plugin mgr tip, it only took a few minutes to get everything working. Whew.. did NOT want to repeat all that - thanks again!  I think I paid $20-$30 for the Korg nanoKontrol but it's a pretty useful little USB CS.

Even cheaper (not counting the Android tablet/phone ) is Humanic's Touch DAW. This $5 (and there's a very useful free version too) app emulates a Mackie Control 1 surface (and more) and implements MIDI over WiFi, Bluetooth, and USB tether. The author has now introduced "MidiHub" for the PC side so no 3rd s/w like rtpMIDI is needed anymore. Very cool!
