^^^That's what I was going to suggest.
 
If you re-save it in 8.5 on your system and he still can't open it, then there's something going on besides SONAR version compatibility issues.

X3 projects will normally open in 8.5, with potentially loss of new stuff.
If its hanging its possibly plugin related or simply a bug in 8.5 that shows up on one of your machines.

So, was the original file created on his 8.5 setup? If all you did was add "DI bass", why not just export WAV(s) for import into the project on his end?
