  • [RESOLVED] New monitor (visual) concerns for Sonar.

Hi folks
I've had a two monitor set up for quite some time - a newish 24 inch and an old 19 incher (not widescreen).
Yesterday I made a shelf for my "music" desk and in putting things back I broke the stand off of the old monitor (it had had a good life so it wasn't too much of a heartache when it went in the trash).
Anyhoo, I'm left with the 24 incher and that isn't enough. The way I see it I can go up to a 27 incher but at my budget it won't be some supadupa high res one or I can go with a 22 inch second monitor (but no bigger due to space).
I found using Sonar on one "small" screen rather difficult as I couldn't split the mixer and alt tab between views like I can using Reason so one screen is tricky but a larger one may work.
Anyone out there using a single 27 inch screen and getting on okay or do I go for the smaller second screen?

Grum.

Personally, I'd go for the second monitor option

Yes I would go for a 22" wide screen or a wide screen 24 ". I have two 22 "wide screens and I love them.

Make sure you have plenty of graphics card memory.

Cheers guys. I have a beasty graphics card so that isn't a problem. I must say the second monitor is slightly ahead but I still haven't dismissed the single big one yet.
If a 24 incher fitted my shelf it would be a no-brainer but two 24 inch monitors is quite wide....around 48 inches wide by my reckoning .

Here are to ways to toggle between a full track and console views:
1) With the console view in the multidock using the keyboard shortcuts D and SHIFT+D

2) With the console view undocked from the multidock
  • click the icon in the upper left of the floating console and select "Disable Floating"
  • maximize the console or track view inside SONAR
  • toggle between the views using ALT-1 and ALT-2

Good news (maybe). I just realised that a 24 inch monitor is not 24 inches wide (obviously that is obvious as it is the hypotenuse rather than the adjacent but I hadn't put the theory into practice). Two 24 inch monitors are not 48 inches wide so the possibilities have increased.
Good stuff!

Is there anything you don't know?

Plenty. I work on one 23" widescreen so it helps to know how to work with Skylight. Screensets are another option for more complex screen layouts. For simple switching between views stick to the methods described above.

You need to also consider the resolution of the "27 incher" compared to your current 24" monitor. If the 24" is 1920x1080 and the 27" is 1920x1080, you aren't gaining any desk area (the image is just larger).

Yes resolution is important. A very high resolution may result in objects being too small. Using the control panel to make the screen easier to read may negatively affect SONAR.
