Hello.  Sorry for all the not-very-interesting questions about installing Sonar.  I think I will have a few more of these in the days to come and I apologize in advance.
 
So I now have Sonar up and running and patched to X2a (yeah!).  In my Cakewalk Projects folder are two sub-files: Audio Data and Picture Cache.  I would like to have the Picture Cache on a separate drive (to save space on my System Drive), and I use a dedicated Audio folder on its own drive.  So can I move the Picture Cache folder to another drive, and get rid of the Audio Data folder?

I assume you are using per-project audio folders, this makes the Global Audio Folder less important. If you are not using per-project audio folders give it serious consideration. Each project should be stored in a separate folder with an audio folder associated with the project file(s) in the folder.
 
Change the location Preferences > File > Audio Data "Global Audio Folder" and "Picture Folder" to any location you wish. Remove the directories on the system drive if you wish but SONAR may recreate them if the locations in preferences become unreachable.
 

You can move the picture cache folder, but Scott Garrigus in his SONAR Power! books always recommended to leave it on the system drive.
 
In preferences, under the File section select Audio Data, and under the All Projects section, you will see a Picture Folder field. After moving the Picture cache folder, use this area to browse to the new location and select it, so SONAR will know where the picture cache folder is.  You will also see the Gobal Audio Folder field under the All Projects section, if you move the Audio Data folder, this field is where you browse to show SONAR where it is. But you can't just delete the Audio Data Folder, as Scook says, SONAR will make another one.

Here's what I would really like - but I don't think Sonar does this: I would like to have all my project files in one folder where I can find then easily, but have all the project audio in a unique folder for each project (on my dedicated audio drive).  Actually, I can do this in Sonar, but it is different from using per-project audio folders, so I have to set it up as I go along.
 
Using the per-project audio folders, each project file goes into its own folder, and the associated audio files go into a sub-folder.  I like having project audio files in separate and unique folders, but I prefer having all project files in one folder.

I would not recommend storing the CWP in a separate place from the audio. You will definatly cause problems doing that. 
 
CWP , the icon, is a super small file that only contains the MIDI data and the project info. The audio is the data hog. 
There is no benefit to keeping them separate that I can think of. It make backing up impossible too. 
 
So do like most of us do and store all your projects on a DATA drive. Each project ( song) in it's own folder. Sonars default to  global audio folder is a sure fired way to loose your work. 
 
My Audio DATA drive has only Audio related files.
I keep Album folders and inside the album is all the song folders.
 Inside the song folders is each ( projects) CWP and the  Audio sub folder.
 I save all projects as MIDI files too now. 
 
Then back all this up to a Third DATA drive, and a fourth..

It is possible to have project files stored in folder all together and audio folders stored elsewhere but it may not be a good idea. The dialog creating projects permits specifying the location of project files and audio folders independently.
 
Using the default arrangement of nesting the audio folder with the project file causes the audio folder to be stored as a relative location in the project file otherwise the audio folder is written as an absolute path in the project. Then there are the other components of a project. In the case of X2 the other project related data are automatic backup and versions of project files. With X3 came gobbler asset files. All of these files are stored with the project file.
 

I too recommend keeping each project's project file (CWP) and its associated per-project audio sub-folder within that project's project folder.
 
I have always regretted any excursion into the unknown of splitting audio and project files into different locations, any time I have tried it in the past, so I don't allow my brain to think about such things any more.  :)
