  • Editing midi takes in PRV & hanging midi notes when looping issue

(The hanging midi notes issue is detailed a few posts down)

I am very confused by this. I work with mostly midi, and I've gotten a hang (I think) of how to record new takes. My problem? When I go to edit one take lane in PRV, the changes are applied to the other takes in the track. (e.g. velocity) I have "Hide Muted Tracks" checked but this doesn't make a difference.

Example that I'm experiencing right now:
If I edit things like velocity with the smart tool, the change(s) are applied to the other takes, as previously mentioned. When I select the notes I want to edit with the Select Tool (F6) and do the velocity changes with the Freehand Draw (F9), everything works as expected. I figured out a way to do what I want here, but is it really the ONLY way? If there's a way to edit midi takes without so much clicking, I'd like to know about it.

I'm also having a BIG problem playing back midi, particularly when in loop mode. For some reason, Sonar X3 keeps playing the next few bars of midi that comes after the loop. The big problem is that it's playing it over what's already playing back within the loop itself. So basically, I have a section set to loop playback, but the midi notes of the section after the loop selection play and hang over what's supposed to play within the actual loop playback.

Can you use the right button to drag/lasso the notes you want and edit only them?

TBH if I need another midi trk I just create a new one. I never used the take lanes for midi coming that I can remember.

Lasso'ing and editing the notes works only when I use the Select Tool. If I use the smart tool (right click and drag), it also seems to select notes in other takes when I need to edit velocity.

I edited the original post. I'm at wits end with this. It especially becomes a problem when I am trying edit.

I don't have a clear picture of what you're doing. Are you editing in the track's inline piano roll with the Edit filter set to Notes, or the separate piano roll view?

I'm editing in the separate piano roll view. It's particularly when I'm editing takes that this occurs. Just double clicking a take/clip and opening PRV to edit it, for some reason, edits all of the takes in that spot in the song. I noticed when I use the smart tool and right click-drag to select the notes I want to edit, it's selecting the notes in the same spot from other takes. HOWEVER, when I use the Select Tool (F9) and select the notes I want to edit with that, it only selects the notes in that take.

I guess what I really want to know if there's a way to get the Smart Tool to stop selecting notes from other takes.

I figured out the midi playback problem.

The problem is, I'm using a midi humanizer (MIDI plugin) on the Drum Midi track. For some reason, this creates a midi "overflow" when I loop across all of my midi tracks. This happens with any MIDI plugin that's native from Cakewalk or third party. Any ideas?

I do not have "Frank's MIDI Plugins" but I see they come in MFX and VST format. Which format are you  using?

I just now got it sorted! There was a solution that wasn't all that obvious. After Googling several hundred times, I finally wound up back at the Sonar X3 online guide and saw something about adding this line under "Options" in TTSEQ.INI:

MfxLookAhead=(integer)

I set it to 100 (I need experiment and see if I can go a little higher), and everything with my MIDI works as it should, even when I loop. Whew, that was a kind of a showstopper.

That's a good catch! I 'd recommend that going forward, when seeking a solution to a problem it's important to mention factors like using MIDI plug-ins.
