  • SOLVED! I'm stumped! Can't record a track without other tracks recording too.

Hi, I've been working to try and solve this problem for a while and can't work out what to do - I'm desperate to do some recording. I'm using Sonar Artist. Whenever I record a 2nd audio track or more, the other tracks already recorded are also recorded to the new track and I can't work out how to isolate it so only what I'm playing/singing at the time is recorded to a given track. I'm sure it must be a simple fix but darned if I can work it out. I've read the documentation but nothing seems to be related or helping. I've searched this forum but can't find anything (or just don't know the right terms to use). Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.

Yep, sounds a little weird. Maybe some information on how you're setting up your track to record, and maybe some info on your audio device and system specs.
I see you have your account set up since 2015, so I'm assuming you're not recording for the very first time. If, on the other hand, this is your first attempt, there are probably some really obvious things to look for. Let me know know how your set up and I'll (or others with much more knowledge than me) will try to help.

That's usually either a "What You Hear" setting on the mixer applet of certain audio interfaces or headphones bleeding previously recorded tracks into a microphone.

Hi rebel007, thank you for your reply.
I have done some recording before with this program and it worked fine. It's been updated several times since then and the problem has surfaced now that I'm trying to record again.

Soundcard: Creative SB X-Fi
Windows 10 Pro, 64bit, Intel Core i7-4770K @ 3.50GHz, 32 gig RAM
Sonar Artist Version: 23.8.0 BUILD 30

As for setup, I just start a new project, add a few audio tracks, and start recording.
Input: Stereo Creative ASIO Mix FL (does it with Mono too) - ASIO Mix FL is the only input that works.
Output: Creative ASIO Front L/R
"Line In" is the only active input device in the sound card Recording properties.
"Speakers" is the only active output device in the Playack properties.

I've tried loading a sample tune and adding a track to that but same thing happens, all the tracks bleed onto the new track when recording.
All my gear is going into my mixer then into the computer via the Line In port on the sound card. I"m running a Roland VG99 plugged into the USB but disconnecting that makes no difference.

Hi StepD,
Thank you, I checked for the "What You Hear" setting and can't find one in the properties for my sound card. I haven't plugged in the Mic yet, still trying to get the guitar and rhythm working first.

Creative interfaces are actually the usual culprits for the "What You Hear" problem you're describing. I don't really know anything about Creative Win10 drivers, but while Sonar is running, right click the speaker icon in the Win10 taskbar, choose Open Volume Mixer and see if one of the volume controls under Applications is labeled "What You Hear." Also, check the link below to see if your interface supports "What You Hear" in Win10. I still think there's a good chance that's what your problem is.

I did what you suggested and found a "What You Hear" option under Recording in the sound properties however it's disabled so shouldn't be active. Having said that, from what you say it still might be lurking somewhere...I don't have another soundcard on hand to test it out.

Hi paul, I'm not sure about "do you have digital in pressed on?" - is that in Sonar or audio properties? All digital audio is disabled in the soundcard audio properties. I only have the target track highlighted when recording.

Ah, it probably depends on your soundcard, but i had a sound card where digital in actived with a button, hmm, my new soundcard presonus audiobox 1818vst you go into set up to turn it on?.......im fairly amateur at sound engineering so i wouldnt take me too seriously......but yeah, digital in had that feature where it just records everything?....so just saying?

It sounds as if your routing for those other tracks are being sent to newly recorded tracks.
It does sound like a soundcard issue but I would check my routing for those tracks.
Make sure you are recording on to audio tracks, not AUX tracks (not even sure Artist has those).
Check the output of previously recorded material. If those tracks are being feed to new tracks your recording on, that's your problem.

For what its worth (I know you probably know this) but if your going to do any serious guitar, bass, microphone recordings and want them to sound semi professional.. Get a cheap soundcard.
I highly recommend a Focusrite Scarlett. I have owned several of them and they have great pre amps and can be bought for under 100 bucks. Matter of fact you can get a good one used for under 100 bucks.
