  • Why does no one talk about the 1176

Other Sonar compressors get so much wind in this tunnel, but the 1176 doesn't get a lot of mention.

Why is that?

I really enjoy it. It makes guitars sound a bit more masculine imho.

Have I said something particularly ill informed (stupid) again??

Not at all. I use it a lot, on guitars and drums mainly. It's not the world's most convincing 1176 emulation, but if you put that consideration aside, it's a good, easy-to-use compressor.

The PC4K channel type is not the 1176. The PC4K is based on the SSL 4000 series, hence the "4K". The PC76 is the one based on Universal Audio's 1176. Personally I'm not a fan of either, though I do like the CA2A a lot and have used the 4K bus version effectively.

It's entirely possible I need to give it a more serious effort.

I like the PC76 (the 1176 emulation) a lot, and use it all the time..   I often use it first in the chain as it's good at catching transients.

For example, I will use it first on a vocal, followed by the Ca-2a.

Now, the PC4K S-Type Channel is a different bag of bananas.  It is an emulation of an SSL 4000 Channel compressor.

I struggled with this one for a while, but now use it far more.  The metering on it is not that great for judging gain reduction, but if you use your ears instead it, works well.

I have used it on many different things, from jangly electric guitars, acoustic guitars, pianos.  It has a certain sound that really works on some material, but I just found it harder to set up at first.

It is worth spending some time with - it is not as intuitive as some of the other PC compressors.

Now I love it.

Jonathan.

My templates have the PC4K already in the track strips. There is also a PC4K bus compressor in the Master after the QuadCurve and before the Concrete Limiter.
The buss PC4K is great for smoothing the mix but still transparent. If I have a hard to tame vocal track I dump the PC4K for the CA2A.
For mastering I usually get rid of the PC4K and the CL in favor of Izotope 5.

I  use the UAD-2 version as well as the Waves versions.   There's a bit of the same in my UA 6176 so I've got that one covered elsewhere.  It's a great compressor and I don't think I have a project without it somewhere in the mix.
