  • Are DirectX synths supposed to crash X3 Producer?

I can't make any of them work, X3 always crashes when I try to add one to a project. Are the DirectX synths just not supported in X3?

Cakewalk still bundles 32bit and 64bit DXi plug-ins in SONAR. Of course, the 32bit DXi plug-ins do not run in 64bit SONAR. Due to the age of some of the plug-ins, they require SONAR run as administrator. Which plug-ins are crashing?

All of them can make it crash, either by failing to work once loaded, or upon being removed whether they worked or not.

Yes, my X3 is 64bit. That must be the trouble. I will try in Administrator mode.

No, even in Administrator mode it can crash. I finally got Pentagon I to work for a moment, but it garbled the audio then crashed.
I don't need these synths, anyway. Can they simply be removed?

Sure, they can be removed. They take up less the 200MB. The easiest way to remove them is to leave them installed, go into the Cakewalk Plug-In Manager, click the DirectX Instruments section then click on each synth and click the "Exclude Plug-in" button below the Plug-in categories window. This will remove them from the plug-in lists in SONAR.

If you prefer to get assistance in getting plug-ins running, I would be glad to move this thread into the SONAR forum where more eyes will see it. This is really a SONAR issue and with more information about your configuration, there should be a way to get the plug-ins working.

Certainly couldn't hurt to get more eyes, thank you.

I did the exclusions, and that helped.

I do run DXi synths in a lot of my 64-bit/Windows 7 projects, so it's definitely possible. It would be helpful to know more about the context, your system, whether they work in standalone mode, and whether all of them is really all of them or just all the ones you use. It would also be helpful to know if you're running X3e or not.

Some particulars about my system: Win7 64bit, Sonar X3e Producer, M-Audio M-Track Quad interface (using the native ASIO at 44.1), Roland A-800 Pro controller connected via midi (not USB), i3 processor, 16gb ram, SSD for my C drive, secondary internal scratch drive and external project storage.

Yes, all of the DXi synthesizers will cause it to crash. I don't use them in stand-alone mode. Don't actually use them at all, I just wanted to know if they could be added to projects I am working on. Every attempt has met with crash, either as they fail to work (or even the rare occasion when they do work), or at removal.

I have no issues with Superior Drummer, Ivory, Fantom, Dimension Pro, Lounge Lizard, etc. Only the DXi will give me trouble.

Did you do a reset and rescan of your plug-ins when you installed X3? Not doing so can lead to a variety of problems with plug-ins. Did they work with previous versions of X3, or did you start with X3e so you have no experience with DXi and other versions of X3?

I keep thinking it has to be something simple because I have three different installs on three very different computers (home, laptop, office) and the DXi synths work fine.

I started with X1, and then upgraded over time. I have always rescanned my VST's. I don't believe I ever did anything with these DXi synths before recently, because they are simply not what I do. I am a guitarist, but sometimes I want a particular sound. So I can't say they ever did or didn't work, but they certainly do not work now.

btw, I have other synths installed which are 32bit and work. Drop Zone, RXP and sfz are three examples in my VST2 folder which work in this 64bit environment, and without resorting to Administrator mode. The trouble is with DXi only.
