Maybe this thread has the answer. It deals with prefab MIDI drum patterns, but seems like it should work with your own files created with the step sequencer. I'm sure someone will come along soon with the definitive answer.

Thanks Larry that is an awesome thread ! I'll try that directory and see how it goes. They did say it wouldn't show up in the beat directory which would be ideal but as long as I can edit it and send it back to the DAW I'm a happy camper. The file from Sonar is a .ssp (step sequencer program) so I'll have to do some arranging.
Fwiw AD2 will pretty much play any midi file I throw at it but getting it to except other midi files is a whole nother ball game.

I have no real experience with the step sequencer but when I messed around with it in the past it created a MIDI file right in the timeline where I had AD2 set up. So couldn't you just save that file as .mid and import it into AD? Then you don't have to deal with trying to make Addictive Drums play an .ssp file.

Excuse my ignorance but I tried that and there is no command by right clicking the midi clip to save it. I tried saving it in the step sequencer and it gave me .mid.ssp
Is there another way I can save it. I also tried straight from AD2 but there is no paste function and control V didn't work either.

If you bounce to clips. The new midi file should show up in the project audio folder provided you have per project audio folders enabled. Alternatively you could drag a midi clip to your desk top and it will be saved there. The thread Larry pointed to for importing into AD is spot on.

MIDI clips are not stored in the project audio folder. Only audio is stored in the project audio folder. MIDI data is stored in the project file itself. MIDI can be exported using the export function or dragging the clip to the desktop or a folder. If I were adding a lot of MIDI clips to the AD user folder, I would create a shortcut to the folder on the desktop and drag clips into it.

I stand corrected. Sorry for the mis-information in my reply. I could have sworn that I have found .mid clips in an audio folder. I went back and checked and Skook is right, no midi files there.
Any who, the drag and drop method is as easy as it gets IMO.

When I try to drag them outside the folder I get a circle with a line through it. Granted these are tracks that I drug into the step sequencer and edited and then saved as the .ssp file. I can drag the AD2 files basically anywhere. The Piano Roll won't let me edit the .ssp file either by lasso. It surrounds it but it doesn't select it.

I believe you are going to need to convert the step sequencer patterns to mid clips first for AD to use it. To do this drag the patterns to a MIDI or instrument track then drag it to the desktop or folder. To edit a step sequencer pattern in the piano roll view click the menu in the upper right-hand corner to change the editor to the PRV.
