The ASUS "ROG" motherboard line is their "gaming" motherboards.
I don't game but what I have for my DAW, ROG Maximus VIII Hero. Its a Z170.  It was under $200 at Amazon when I got it back in November.  They have Z270 "ROG" boards.

Crypto currency? Doesn't sound like something I'd be interested in, but I am mildly curious. I'll have to check it out.

That ASUS board looks like a nice board, for sure. A lot of people swear by ASUS motherboards. It should certainly fit in the 'white' theme that he is wanting. I wouldn't be afraid of opting for that one.

Let us know what you decide to go with, and how it works out. I'm always interested in the little niggles/quirks/pleasant surprises/etc. that people run into during and after a new build.

They use graphics cards to "mine" Bitcoin (and alternatives). There was a time where you could make serious money with an affordable system. I think it's getting pretty hard now as the required computer power is pretty large compared to how many coins you will actually mine.

Ok, here's the updated list.......any thoughts/changes/recommendations on the components?

BTW, is there a one stop shop to get all these components or is it better to go to individual places that have the best deal on them?

I buy most (practically all) of my PC parts either from newegg or Amazon.  Amazon has much better return policy than newegg (a negative about newegg).  I've never purchased anything from Outlet PC so I don't know how they are.

When I built my last desktop DAW system, I got the motherboard, CPU, power supply and cooler from Amazon.  The BeQuiet case and Corsair memory from newegg.  I reused a Samsung EVO 850 (500GB) SSD and 2TB hard drive, Monitor, and wireless Keyboard and Mouse from my old DAW desktop.  I'm not using a separate video card.

Thanks again Jack!

I also have only bought from Newegg (about 95% of my current build) and from Amazon.
Outlet PC seems to get really bad reviews over here: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Outletpc while SuperBiiz got very good reviews: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/eWiz

This is going to be his first build and looks to be a very nice one. Will keep you all posted once he gets it up and running.

Thanks for all the tips!!
Cheers,

Looks like a pretty sweet system! Good idea to go with a full tower IMO. Don't forget the storage drive. I don't see one on the last list.

Do you think it's necessary for gaming since he has a 1TB SSD? I know games can take up a bit of space, but thought he could add a 3TB HD down the road?

Or is it better to get one in this build?

I don't play the newer games, but I know some of them (most?) demand quite a lot of space. They would certainly load faster from the SSD. He can always add a large storage drive down the road if he needs it. Heck, prices might even come down some more by then. The nice thing about most full-tower cases is that it's easy to add stuff like that in. I like to have a storage drive for system/file backups mainly. Acronis True Image has saved my bacon more than once. It can be a pretty sickening experience to lose pictures/emails/etc.
