I've always ignored this message myself, but it's not as if I have a choice. When I go to Preferences|Driver Settings and click "ASIO Panel..." nothing happens. I don't seem to have an ASIO Panel, whatever that is.

There should have been software for your interface that installed a control application for ASIO. Sonar calls that application to open it up. You may be able to find it in Windows' Control Panel.

Also, "Buffers In Playback Queue" is set to 2 and grayed out. Same with the Buffer Size Slider: it's permanently all the way to the left ("Fast"), and grayed out.

Those pertain to non-ASIO drivers.

On the right end of the slider it says 2.7 msec, 256 samples.

You could probably go lower if you could open the interface's applet, but that's a good compromise setting anyway.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried clicking on the ASIO button a second time?  Not a double-click, just two individual clicks.  For whatever reason this is something I've always had to do with my Scarlett 18i6 though others don't seem to get this behavior.

Thanks, Craig. The interface does have a mixer app. I haven't looked at it since I originally set it up years ago. The interface (PCI card) was installed and working before I installed X3. It's quite old and did not come with ASIO drivers and as far as I know ASIO drivers were never released for it (I checked the website a couple of times), so I used WDM. But after X3 was installed I suddenly had ASIO drivers. I did not make this choice manually, but I have stayed with it because everybody seems to think it's a better way to go. I'll check out the driver app tomorrow.

Steve - Strangely, I have tried that, but it didn't make any difference.

The M-Audio Delta Control Panel does have a section labeled "sample settings." In it you can set the sample rate and "ASIO/WDM buffer size." I was a little surprised to see this because there were no ASIO drivers when this card was new and I have looked for them and didn't find them. I guess ASIO must have been included in the final update, and I just didn't notice. I will miss this card when it finally quits on me.

This control panel is not called when I click "ASIO Panel" in Sonar preferences, but now that I know what I'm looking for I can find it if Melodyne insists. Thanks!

I used a mAudio Audiophile 24/96 for a long time. It still works. I just use a VS-100 now.

Anyway, my ASIO panel wouldn't come up either when I pressed the ASIO panel button in Sonar. So what I did was brought up Sonar's Preference Audio and clicked the ASIO button, then I brought up the mAudio ASIO panel (I kept it in the systray to the right) and would make my adjustments. Then I would close the mAudio ASIO panel and then hit the "Apply" button on the Sonar Preference, and then I would see the settings change/update in Sonar's preferences panel.

Good tip, Grem. I'll use it, and thanks!
