All the major DAWs are capable of making good records. I use Sonar because I am familiar with it, the support is great, and it comes bundled with a lot of content (plus I'm too lazy to learn a new platform when I could spend that time writing).
I am curious about something, however. Surely someone in the industry knows the ranking of the various DAWs by units sold and by dollars in sales. I wonder why we never see those numbers. The numbers alone are not the basis for a buying decision since some DAWs may be more popular large commercial hardware-based facilities, some may be more popular with hobbyists, some better for composers of EDM, or whatever. (Example: There are many more project studios than large commercial facilities, but I would bet $1,000 Pro Tools is the most popular in the large facilities.)
Still, I would like to know the numbers because I am curious.
I do know from trade magazines and ads that ProTools, Logic, and Cubase *seem* to be the most supported by hardware/console manufacturers, but that doesn't really tell us much about raw sales, just who hardware companies think makes up their target audience.
In units sold, my guess is that Pro Tools and Logic are #1 and #2, with Sonar and Cubase very close for #3. I do not think Pro Tools is far ahead in units, but because of its cost, it is no doubt way ahead in sales dollars.
