Is there any reason I can't record pitch bend data using the pitch wheel on one of the VST synths? I have record pitch wheel checked off in MIDI record preferences. I also tried multiple synths but still no pitch bend data. I'm stumped!

SOLVED! See scook's response below as well as Craig's help. Thanks guys!

To clarify, do you mean record pitch bend data from your physical keyboard's pitch bend wheel, which is controlling the VST synth, or record data from the VST synth's virtual pitch bend wheel?

Not all VST instruments output MIDI. When you insert a synth, check "Enable MIDI Output." If the synth can output MIDI, it will do so.

In my experience to date, enabling write automation for a synth usually just automates panel controls, not any virtual keyboard that's part of the synth.

Good question. I don't have a physical keyboard so yes, it's from the VST virtual pitch wheel.

The wierd part is that some of the pitch bend data is being captured, but only a few negative values. Craig, where would I find the Enable MIDI output setting on say Reaktor?

It is in Sonar's insert synth dialog box. I don't know if you additionally have to enable something in the synthesizer itself.

In X3, if a soft synth is capable of sending MIDI data, the option is enabled by default. The option is selectable in the Insert Soft Synth dialog as Craig points out. It may also be toggled by right-clicking on the synth on the synth rack.

One way to record pitch wheel data would be to automate the MIDI wheel parameter. On the MIDI track use an automation lane to select MIDI.... From the MIDI envelop dialog select Wheel from the Type drop down. Enable Write automation and click on the automation fader and use the mouse wheel or drag the fader while playing the track back.

That's exactly what I tried to do and was expecting that to work but nothing was recorded. I tried it with several other VST synths and got the same result.

Did you do the part not in bold? My post refers to a MIDI track automation lane fader not the synth UI which is what the original post appeared to be asking about.
