No, you can change them to mono just like tracks. This is very useful. I use mono busses a lot. For example, return your Sonitus delay in mono and pan it to taste. Or return a reverb in mono. Or for a group of backing vocals, use a send to a mono bus, use different EQ settings, pan to one side and return it to mix with the group of tracks that are panned differently.

For whatever reason I *never* think of setting busses to mono.   Nice one!

Cool, I am glad to have opened a new creative door for someone. Experiment with mono busses from time to time. It is great indeed.

In fact it is a good way (and a lot of fun) to learn about phase relationships and how they are affected by your EQ's

Try this:

Take a mono track

Pan it hard left

Take a send from that track into a mono bus panned hard right

On the mono bus, engage your high pass filter and start sweeping it to the right. Listen to the effect it has.

Try notching something out also.

Then compensate the change in volume with your fader and see what you get.

Ok, I am a total audio mixing nerd...ha ha ha

That I will do...

What you are describing can be easily explained like this:

You have your vocal track routed to a mono bus.

YOur vocal track could be mono or stereo, it doesn't matter. You have its' output feeding a mono bus. This makes it so that no matter how you pan your vocal track, it will remain dead-center because it is routed through a mono bus that is panned center.

Hold down your ALT key, then select your vocal track, then let go. Then look at your busses to see which one is highlighted. I bet that you will find it is a mono bus.

Hi Sylvan,  I tried what you said.  Held down alt, selected the track (I hit the number button) and then let go.  No bus seemed to be selected even though the track's send is going to the delay bus.  I have tried mono and stereo (I assume you do this with the interleave (bowtie thing?)  Still no luck.  I've looked at other projects and just can't see what the differences are that would cause this project to act differently from others.

Although the delay bus seems to be set to stero (bowtie is lit up) It still won't pan but when I inserted a brand new stereo bus it pans fine.  Could the file or bus be corrupted somehow?

Yes.

This has been known to happen on many peoples systems.

This is not the OP's issue at all. And even if it were, bouncing a stereo vocal to mono just to pan would not be a good solution. You could use Channel tools or something instead.

Sounds like a complex solution to a simple problem.

Do you have the same FX (and presets) inserted on the new stereo bus as the existing one that isn't panning correctly?

I assume I do.  I added the new bus and dragged the delay settings across from the one that was not working.  I then tested athe new one and deleted the old one.  seems to work fine now.

Don't forget also to make sure the new track/buss has got the same I/O and send routings as the old one

Hi MGB5,

Sorry I was out for the weekend - working the whole time at a crappy studio for people who I would rather not work for...but that is another story ha ha ha.

Anyway, I created an ftp account for you so that can upload your project there and I can check it out. You caught my attention on this and I want to learn what went wrong.

If you please copy your whole SONAR project to the ftp server, I will give it a go.

I sent your username and password info in a private message to your username here on the forum.

Use filezilla as an ftp client if you can, it seems the easiest and most straight forward. Let me know if you have any problems with that.

I created a video a long time ago that shows how to use filezilla and copy folders/files back and forth on my ftp server. You can view it at www.battlefrost.com/ftp

When you get to that link, in the upper left corner, click on the link to watch the video (if you need to). If you are already familiar with ftp clients, you don't need to see the video.

Take care,
-Charles
