Hi,

I'm trying to setup sidechain compression in Sonar X3.

Say for example I'm using it with a synth and kick drum. If I create a bus and then sidechain the kick drum to a compressor on that bus, then the compressor reads the incoming signal but I no longer hear the kick drum. So basically the source sound has gone.

Any ideas where I'm going wrong?

Thanks in advance.

It's not clear but I assume that you are trying to reduce the volume of the synth in time with the drums.

In the example below I have a Synthmaster One track playing chords with the CA2A compressor inserted on its Pro Channel and external sidechaining selected. I have then inserted a send from the drum bus to the CA2A on the Synth track. The amount of reduction of the synth caused by the drums is adjusted by the Peak Reduction on the CA2A.

You can hear the effect more clearly if you make the send Pre instead of Post fader (click the orange Post button) and turn down the volume of the drum bus. You will then just hear the pulsing of the synth in time with the (now quieter) drums and turning off the CA2A will restore the synth to non-sidechained sound so you can toggle to hear the difference.

Make sure you are using a send on the Kick drum track and NOT assigning its output to the compressor.
