When one looks at the Bandlab site, it claims that everything is completely free. Unless the actual business is illegal drug or gun running, "free" is not a business model. I certainly understand the "dotcom critical mass" strategy where people don't worry about revenues or profits at the outset and figure that will take care of itself later once a critical mass is reached. Is that what is happening here?
Given what the SONAR community has come through with Roland and then Gibson, I'd like to think that adults could have a grown-up discussion about the real business model. How is Bandlab going to get paid?
Right now, they are offering a Soundcound-like service for free. They are offering a music composer's tool for free. And they are planning to offer a new desktop DAW, giving a free license (at least for the first version) to a large base of former Cakewalk customers. This all costs money. Where does the revenue come from?
I'd certainly welcome any speculation, informed or otherwise. Perhaps Mr. Meng can share some of his thoughts with us as a show of transparency.
