  • How would I go about recording streaming audio from the internet? (p.2)

@John... oooh just reminded me. The manual actually has a description of how to connect the cables to avoid a feedback loop IIRC. I'll have to dig it out and see what's up. Cheers.

Remember you can connect two sound cards together with one feeding the other because it will be an analog connection and no syncing is needed.

If you have another card ( your Layla) on your system I would use it as the default for Windows and the Scarlett for recording what the Layla puts out.

I have 2 computers, one for internet and one for Sonar. I have the audio from the internet computer coming into my mixer so I can listen with my DAW monitors, same for my TV. When I want to record any audio from the internet I just move the cables to an input on the mixer that records them into the DAW.

It would be a lot easier for me to just snag the audio from my laptop but then I thought I didn't have the right adapters to make it happen but now that I'm thinking about it again I believe I do. Gotta dig through my gack and see what's there. If not I guess I could just buy the right stuff. It shouldn't be too expensive. In fact maybe I should make use of the SPDIF connections. That I believe I would have to buy new cables for but then I'd be able to listen to streaming tunes through my monitors instead of my crappy computer speakers. Cheers.

hmm... actually it looks like I could use regular RCAs to input to the monitors. Cool... I have those. I think I'll stick to an 1/8th stereo splitter to 1/4" jacks for inputting to the Scarlett though.

it's odd that the 18i6 doesn't have internal routing when the 8i6 did, tho.

Yeah. I asked Matt from Focusrite about that and it's like I said... they make all those models with pretty much the same guts but wire them differently. It keeps the cost down. When I was a buying I had to make a choice between the extra analog ins and the loopback function. I chose the extra ins in case I ever need to record a full drumkit again. No biggie really. I probably shouldn't be streaming off the net with my studio system anyway and my laptop has a pretty decent headphone output.

I'm confused. If you're recording him playing live, why do you need to stream it from the web?

I've recorded streaming audio by plugging a cable from my soundcard's output to the soundcard's input. Be careful with the monitoring or you could get some nasty feedback. Also, make sure you turn off your Windows sounds or you may get some unwanted sounds in your recording.

@daveny... Heh heh, because he's gonna be over a thousand miles away. It's also a skill I'd like to have for sampling and stuff too. Windows sounds and all that have been disabled long ago. I think just recording the output from my laptop should be good enough. It certainly would be the easiest although I do want to attempt a physical loopback at some point but I don't want to blow something up.

I downloaded the manual and it appears that you can set up a MIX with the output that you can choose from the INPUTS in sonar which would do exactly what I'm talking about.

I don't have a scarlett to try it on, but if you look at the mix section of your manual you should be able to set up a mix with just the same thing as the stereo output 1/2 and choose that as the INPUT in sonar under DAW>MIX 1
