Still not convinced
Have both Sonar X3 (64) and Platinum - having major issues using Kontakt 5
Reinstalled Windows 10 (64) repeatedly as well as both products and both last 5 - 10 minutes and CRASH
64 Gig Ram 1TB SSD - Free HD Space 700 GIG

Installed demo of PreSonus - pushed it to the Max - 24 tracks with some tracks being "Multi" Kontakt 5 and sings like a sweet devil

I'll need a lot of convincing

i am a lifetimer who is still using Sonar, but if moving forward with new "Sonar" requires me to pay full price again, i "would prefer not to" - Herman Melville, from “Bartleby, the Scrivener” (1853)

This news is fantastic!
With the lifetime we have saved a lot to have Sonar the important thing is that they resume the development of this wonderful daw.
I understood even better how Sonar is professional when I tried others.
Come on Sonar!

I think the real question is, what is the appropriate price model that 75% of us Lifetime owners would pay. I feel certain that BC would not ask a 100% re-up. But I think the message we send as owners regarding our willingness to fairly pay for this product will determine their commitment to us as well.

Some want their Cake and eat it too, I'll annually commit to a fair price.

Hmm.. I read something about "cloud based" stuff? I don't know, I don't know.

Anyway - While it's good that (parts of?) Sonar are purchased by this new company, I am afraid it's too late for me. I already have "jumped ship" and have invested in learning all ins and outs of Cubase. I do not think I will go back to Sonar any time soon. Maybe if (any) new development is strongly focused on MIDI (especially VST3 and VST expression, Chord assistant, tracks and Chord Pads and so on) and music notation, I will give it a thought.

However - I still love to use some synths from cakewalk (Dimension Pro, Rapture, Z3TA 2 and so on). If those get some serious new development I will be happy to buy any upgrade.

And - Now I think about it. Will the new "owners" keep up the authentication servers for the "Gibson Sonar"? In other words - will the "old version" of Platinum Pro still be installable even if it's in new hands? Or do we need a new subscription to "renew" to the new owner? We will see, we will see....

This is great news. What I learned from this was that Sonar was way behind! S1P is a much better product and improved my workflow and efficiency. Now the challenge from BC is to leapfrog S1P and make the "new sonar"  better than S1P.

If they succeed, I'll come back. If not, no biggie, they already did me a big favor by forcing me to learn a better product which I would have never done on my own. So THANKS!

Interesting news. It's interesting that Bandlab will welcome Sonar developers (the real Bakers) into their fold. I've already jumped to Cubase Pro, and enjoying it. For me this is a game of risk between (i) the perceived longevity of Sonar and (ii) the perceived longevity of Cubase. DAW-time is a valuable luxury for me and I want the best guarantee that the DAW will be around for the foreseeable future.  May be Sonar will, but I tend to back Cubase.

Even as a Splat lifer I suspect it will cost a reasonable stake to get back in to Bandlab-Sonar, and that probably won't be for a few months or more. It depends what that cost is, and how long it takes. The longer they leave it, there will be more attrition from the Sonar user base. I may buy-in out of curiosity but I don't expect much.

BandLab Technologies did not acquire the operating company of Cakewalk Inc., only the complete set of intellectual property, patents, trademarks and certain assets necessary or related to the entire Cakewalk product suite.

Although Cakewalk (the company) has already passed intact into a couple of hands (Roland and Gibson), this is a first.  Cakewalk is no longer an operating company.

So we will just have to see how this plays out.  As customers, our business relationship was with the company.

This would be a good opportunity for BandLab to offer some incentives to keep former customers engaged, but that remains to be seen.  They do not "owe" us anything.  Clean slate that it is...
