  • Poor performance of sonar since recent update

Cakewalk, please recheck your performance measurements.  Since installing .10, Sonar is very slow, particularly at painting the display in real time.   The issues seem to mainly be graphical.   It acts as if I have the display in pause mode.  Anyone else experiencing this?

We'll check it out but benchmarks are typically covered during the release testing.  We've been continuing to make performance improvements so this shouldn't be happening.

Please check task mgr performance tab when it's laggy to see if there is a lot of bg activity.  I've currently got issues on a home pc but in my case it may be a failing drive controller as Event Log has a lot of warnings about the physical drive taking too long to respond to reads.  Chkdsk reports ok and SMART params seem all right.  So drive issues won't always show up in the typical tools.  So when Windows Updates comes in it slows everything down to the point of being unusable.  In my case I'm going to find the drive manufacturer's utility and run that to see if that can diagnose anything.

Malware can cause jerky graphics, too. Did you happen to download any "free" utilities around the same time as the SONAR update? Anti-virus and automated backup software can sometimes be the culprit. Does the problem go away after an hour or so? A failing disk drive, as Keith points out, can also cause general slowness. Does it happen more often when using sampled instruments than when playing back straight audio? Is the problem worse with some projects than others? Does it help to freeze tracks?

What happens if you rollback to the previous version?

If you're still having issues, then likely it is something else on your system.

I rolled back to ver 08 and all is well.   Not sure if the issue was 09 or 10 but I'm happy w 08 and under the current circumstances, thats sounds like where I'll staying.  Thanks all for the great support and good luck to Cakewalk developers!

Since the recent news, I've updated to the 10/2017 version (23.10.0) to ensure I'm at the latest version.  Based on the above information, was this a bad move?  Are many people seeing this poor performance?

How exactly do you roll back to a previous version? I have not had to do this previously.

Thanks,
Steve

Open Command center and right click on Sonar.

Choose "Rollback". This will allow you to choose any version you'd like.
you can also open the command center folder where all the downloads are stored.

Many thanks for that Chuck, I did not know you could do that.

I see from that list, the 10/2017 release was an "Early Access" release. Does that imply there may be some instability?

Cheers,
Steve

I've since moved to version 9 and things are fine sop for me, 10 was  and continues to be issue as I've upgraded to it more than once and had same problem.   I don;t have malware or virus as I know how to keep computer clean so for me the issue is internal to version 10.... that said, I'm great sticking at 9

I've learned over the years that everyone's set up is different. some of us use different plug ins, some of us use different hardware, exc. There are so many variables. That's why im so glad Sonar decided the monthly rolling updates. We can live with something we like and not have to worry about missing tons of features.
For what its worth, im still on version 9.2017 as well.
That's the version I like best and that's the version that works best for me.
